Stop Mid-Decade Redistricting in Florida!

Governor DeSantis has called a special session of the state legislature to consider mid-decade redistricting. The Florida Constitution makes it illegal to draw maps to favor a political party.

Urgently we need to contact our State Representatives and Senators.

Besides postcarding, we can also make telephone calls or send emails to our State Representatives and State Senators voicing our opposition to mid-decade redistricting.

Postcard Ideas:

  1. On November 20, gavel in and gavel out and leave our map as is. Mid-decade redistricting for partisan gain is against the law in Florida.
  2. Don’t cheat on redistricting. Follow the law. Focus your attention on the cost of groceries, insurance and utilities.
  3. In Florida, 65% of Democrats, 64% of Independents, and even 43% of Republicans believe your attempt at redistricting is a bad idea. In Florida, it is also against the law.
  4. Do not cheat Florida voters out of fair and honest elections. Follow the Florida Constitution which prohibits mid-decade redistricting.

Below Are Some Possible Phone Messages to Leave or Adapt for Emails:

1. Hello my name is [Insert name], I am a [constituent or Florida resident] and I strongly urge you to vote against

the proposed mid-decade gerrymandering of Florida’s voting districts. This proposal would destabilize our electoral

system and disfranchise significant numbers of voters, especially communities of color, immigrants, young people,

and rural residents.

2. My name is [Insert name], and I am a [constituent or Florida resident]. As a concerned citizen and a registered voter, I strongly urge you to vote against the proposed mid-decade redistricting of Florida. Any attempt to conduct a mid-decade Census or redistricting effort violates the plain language of the Fair Districts provisions by allowing political interests to override the foundational principle of representative government grounded in equal population

and accountability.

3. Hello, my name is [Insert name], a concerned resident of the State of Florida and registered voter. Please reject

any mid-decade redistricting scheme and instead focus your time and our taxpayer money on things affecting our daily lives, like the skyrocketing cost of groceries, insurance, and utilities.”

4. Hello, I'm [Insert Your Name], and I have lived full time on [location] for [#] years and am registered to vote in your district. Please oppose any effort to redraw legislative and congressional districts outside the regular cycle – that is, before 2030.

5. Good afternoon, my name is [Insert name]. I am a citizen and a registered voter, and a [constituent or Florida resident]. Please oppose partisan gerrymandering. It undermines the foundational principles of fair representation and violates the Fair District requirements that Floridians overwhelmingly voted to add to our state constitution.

6. My name is [Insert name]. As a concerned Florida resident and a registered voter, I strongly urge you to reject any attempt to deviate from the longstanding, constitutionally grounded decennial Census and redistricting cycle. A mid-decade effort would not only be an unprecedented disruption to established democratic norms, but it would also undermine the stability of our electoral system and intensify voter disenfranchisement, particularly among communities of color, eligible immigrants, young people, and rural residents.

7. “My name is [Insert Your Name] and I am calling from [Insert Your Town]. As a concerned Florida resident and a registered voter I am urging you to oppose any attempt to redraw Florida’s legislative or congressional maps before the 2030 Census. Florida law is clear: gerrymandering for political purposes is illegal and undermines fair representation.

8. Hello, I'm [Insert Your Name], and I have lived full time on [location] for [#] years and am registered to vote in your district. Redrawing our maps mid-decade would waste taxpayer dollars and destabilize our elections. Rigging the maps silences the voices of everyday Floridians and prioritizes politicians’ power over the people you serve.

9. Hi, my name is [Insert name], a citizen and a registered voter, and a [constituent or Florida resident]. Please reject the proposal for mid-decade redistricting in Florida. 65% of Democrats, 64% of Independents, and even 43% of Republicans. Attempts to redistrict Florida now, in the middle of the decade and in line with a national partisan battle, are an attempt by leaders to pick their voters to skew election outcomes.

If no one picks up, please leave a message – it’ll count.
