Dear friends and neighbors,

During this week's Energy & Commerce Committee hearings, I spoke about my recently introduced SHIELD Act to ensure that individuals whose social media accounts are used to post libelous, scandalous, and criminal content have legal recourse against identity thieves. It is time to review common-sense reform to help victims of these crimes.

In the district, we held a very informative meeting with our Veterans Advisory Board. We discussed how the PACT Act is helping veterans, our latest Service Academy Day, and other resources for veterans in the community. Proud of our work to honor and uplift those who served.

Earlier in the week, we received great news that the Biden Administration canceled another $7.7 BILLION in student loans, providing relief to over 160,000 borrowers. This relief includes many teachers, nurses, police, and other public servants, as well as SAVE Program enrollees.

In the House Committee on Agriculture, we held a markup for our Farm Bill. Unfortunately, the House version cuts $30 billion from food assistance (SNAP), including a $2.1 billion cut for Florida. It also cuts commodity and conservation programs for local farmers. I support the Senate version of the Farm Bill because history tells us that only a bipartisan bill can become law. So we have more work to do.

I am pleased with our efforts to help secure critical provisions like disaster relief block grants, citrus greening research, beef processing competition improvements, and livestock vaccine banks. We also increased Puerto Rico food assistance (NAP), though it still has a $200 million cut due to SNAP cuts.

In our district, 15% of our constituents—over 100,000—use the food assistance program, so we must protect it. I applaud the American Farm Bureau for stressing that this bill must be truly bipartisan. In the meantime, the bipartisan 2018 bill will remain in effect to help farmers and families.

I'm proud of our accomplishments this week and look forward to working in the district next week to improve the lives of Central Floridians.

Working to Protect Against Online Identity Theft
During this week's Energy & Commerce Committee Communications & Technology Subcommittee hearing, I spoke about my recently introduced SHIELD Act to ensure that individuals whose social media accounts are used to post libelous, scandalous, and criminal content have legal recourse against identity thieves. It is time to review common-sense reform to help victims of these crimes.
Safeguarding the Right to Online Privacy
In the Energy & Commerce Committee Subcommittee on Innovation, Data, and Commerce, we discussed the American Privacy Rights Act—a matter particularly important to Central Floridians following the case of Alex Bugay, a UCF student who suffered from identity theft online. In response to this issue, I introduced the SHIELD Act to ensure that individuals whose social media accounts are used to post libelous, scandalous, and criminal content have legal recourse against identity thieves.
Working to Pass the Farm Bill
This week, the House Committee on Agriculture held a markup for our Farm Bill. Unfortunately, the House version cuts $30 billion from food assistance (SNAP), including a $2.1 billion cut for Florida. It also cuts commodity and conservation programs for local farmers. I support the Senate version of the Farm Bill because history tells us only a bipartisan bill can become law. Highlighting the Need to Transition Puerto Rico from NAP to SNAP
Earlier in the week, we participated in a press conference with the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) to highlight the need for Puerto Rico to transition from NAP to SNAP. Currently, Puerto Rico’s 3.2 million residents don’t receive equal food assistance benefits as those on the mainland.

Toxic-exposed veterans in Central Florida deserve to access all their rightfully earned benefits without issue.

For more information, visit VA.gov/PACT or call 1-800-698-2411.
