Today, before day two of the Protecting Our Children Conference began, advocates for Native children gathered to demonstrate support for all Native children at the annual National Day of Prayer for Native Children. Frontline Indian child welfare workers, mental health providers, legal professionals, and studentsalong with tribal, state, and federal leaderscame together to pray for the health, safety, and well-being of Native children.

Here is a glimpse of some of the highlights from today:
General Session Highlight
  • Nezul Be Hunuyeh Child & Family Services panelists Cindy Ghostkeeper, Michelle Morris, and Michelle Chase shared an experiential learning demonstration showcasing the importance of cultural identity for Indigenous children entering foster care. Before the demonstration began, Michelle Morris began stacking a giant Jenga. "Imagine the story of a child’s life. 'Picking up the pieces' shows that the right support and foundation can help [make a difference]."
Workshop Highlight
  • The workshop We R Native, Paths Remembered & Healthy Youth: Promoting Inclusivity in Adolescent Health and Well-Being provided insight and connections to support the dissemination of culturally appropriate, holistic, and inclusive programs for American Indian and Alaska Native youth. During the workshop, Michelle Singer said, "The youth know what they need, so their place has to be next to our tribal leaders." Michelle went on to say, "If you have a youth council or inspiring youth in your community who want to do something to improve the lives of their peers and their community, get them involved. Sometimes we adults stand in their way, but they're ready. Bring them to the table, bring the elders to the table, and let's do it together."
  • Chehalis Basketry as a Healing Art was sold out with conference participants getting some hands-on self-care.
Banquet Dinner
Tonight at 6:30 p.m., NICWA will be hosting the annual banquet dinner. We are very excited about honoring our Champions for Native Children, catching up with the Protect ICWA Campaign, and laughing with comedian Marc Yaffee.
