Dear Friends,
When I opened the mail at the Center today, I opened a 9x12 envelope sent by Kristin Loomis from SPC's past leadership. Inside was Volume one, and Number one of the Solano Pride Center's inaugural newsletter from November, 1999.
Take a look at the text from it, and gain a glimpse of the shoulder's we stand upon! I'll put the jpg of the four sheets here below among some of the musings I am having while perusing the document today.

Our community recognized well before the Center got started that we need mental health and support services. It was great to see them reaching out to the county and others. The Horizon's Foundation continues to help fund our life saving work, supporting us with $30,000 this last year to help supplement the programs we offer from the Solano County Contract through Health and Social Services and Solano Public Health.

Youth programs were among the first programs, and they remain so important for our community, because we know that the kids who don't have a supportive environment at home face the worst outcomes with 8.5 times more suicidal ideation and attempts, 3.5 times more at risk of risky drug use, and 3.3 times more risk of risky sex. Now that we know the real numbers, we still have the hard work of helping families know that the best way to support their kiddos is with love, acceptance and trying to understand more, and doing one's own work with a therapist or a faith leader separately, so their kids don't have to go through the hard times and symptoms of living in an unaccepting household.

The Rainbow Fund of the past has been replaced by the operations budget of the Center, but we do fundraisers for Suisun Pride, proms for teens and adults, and other events we plan together. So do our Partners in Solano AIDS Coalition, Solano Serenity Center, Louise Lawrence Trans Archive, Vallejo Gay Network, Benicia LGBTQ+ Network and the new Vacaville LGBTQIA+ Networks, all leading local events, socials, and more. Nobody's Place took our donations and helped put the money collected to good work in many ways, including local HIV/AIDS testing!

Did you know Vallejo had 5 gay and lesbian bars at one time? Well, we can add a queer bookstore called "Black Springs Books" to the list of bookstores there, along with the one in Vacaville back then! We still talk about creating a parents group (if we could only find the right day and time of the month to meet!), and coming up with other ideas for what kind of supportive events we can create to serve the community. Benicia just may still be a Lesbian Heaven. Let's ask Christina and Donna!
You've come a long way, baby! Let's keep growing our support services, social events, and ways to create community together! If you have any pieces of our collective history of our region, please do share them with us so we can add them to our Library!

"Being part of the Singing Tree Mural creator was an excellent experience. I didn't know what to expect when I signed up but was pleasantly surprised. One thing I learned is there are no mistakes in Art and that was enough to give me the confidence I needed to feel like I belonged in the group.
The people in the group were very welcoming and warm, no judgement.
Vickie, Leslie, and Diana were absolutely wonderful. They provided a lot of guidance and encouragement along the way. They made me feel completely at ease in the environment.
I learned more about Crescent Moon and am excited to begin volunteering with them. All in all it was a great experience I think others would find the same given the opportunity."

Dear Solano Pride Community,
Happy Pride!
On Sunday we had our third annual Suisun Pride on the downtown Suisun Waterfront.
I was the dude in the pink vest helping folks all day and then sitting in between requests at the Solano Pride tent out front.
I am filled with so much appreciation and gratitude. Thank you Aaron Sencil for all of your passion, drive, and knowledge. From maps and coordination and how much you community build all year long, so beautiful and impressive!
To our Executive Director Will McGarvey, your desire to bring the entirety of the Queer community together in Solano County is exactly what we have all needed and even more so post Covid and the current political atmosphere. You are bold, loving and supportive and I appreciate your leadership, courage and friendship.
To the staff of Solano Pride, each and every one of you plays an integral part of making this corner of the world a brighter, safer, healthier and happier space for our community. I know how hard you work, we see you and your endless dedication. During a year of extreme conditions, y’all rally forth. Whatever I can do to put wind in your sails, I am but a call or text away and believe me we are trying to provide more.
Cristina, I have to call you out. Your cultivation of these amazing volunteers that keep the wheels moving at every single event, it is not easy and your leadership and nurture shows in the gratitude and joy these volunteers exude, even after working Pride all day long and I had to ask for one more task. What a class act you and these people are.
To our Volunteers! Y’all killed it, thank you from the bottom of my heart. We could not do what we do without you! Thank you for your bravery, persistence and energy!
To my colleagues on the board, thank you for trusting me and collaborating continuously. Y’all jump in all the time and work so hard. May this month fill us with the energy we need to keep this going!

To my family that took care of each other and fed me, gave me Ben Gay and ibuprofen before I passed out Sunday night. I could not do any of this without the safe harbor you have provided me. It is the model we have made that I want to bring our entire community, thank you.

LGBTQ+ folks are born activists, we have to explain ourselves and fight for our rights. Our counselors have special training and skills in treating a vast number of issues. Their training in treating trauma, depression, anxiety, and grief has been especially helpful as we've navigated the ever-changing and uncertain path of our times. We are fortunate to have counselors with LGBTQIA2S+ cultural competency, so you know they will have heard about your uniqueness just by stepping through our doors! You can sign up for free counseling by calling our confidential Counseling line at 707.389.4520.
There are openings available for those who wish to be seen for counseling services right now! We can even talk to you if you just want to make sense of the times we live in. We are able to see clients for up to six months at no cost to clients, helping you make sense of life as a queer person, get support coming out, or deepening your self confidence by talking about your past. This group is designed for the LGBTQ+ community. It is open to actors and non-actors alike. No prior theater experience is required.

The Gender Expansive Circle will meet again on Fridays, May 15th at 5:30 pm at the Center for movie and conversations. There will be time to see the Transformation Station and Library. The QR code: Queer Recovery
A secular 12-step LGBTQ+ group for those in recovery for any addictions. The next meeting will be Sunday, June 7th at 7 pm. The group will meet in person at the Solano Pride Center’s Conference Room on every Sunday evening now, at 7 pm. Come to the main doors near our offices and knock to be let in. Hosted by Christopher Cortes (christopher@solanopride.org) with shared leadership from other members of the group. Anonymity will be protected. Coping with Loss and Grief.
Grief has no set boundaries. Grief comes in many different avenues such as losing a spouse, parents, a sibling, your pet, the loss of a friend or a friendship, even the loss of a job can cause us to grieve.
This new group will continue Friday, June 12th from 10 - 11:30 am on zoom. The next gathering would be June 26th, also online.
The way in which we cope with the loss is the way in which we begin to heal and move forward with our lives no matter the depth of pain and sorrow we are in. One way and there are many depending on how one copes with the loss is to talk about what we are feeling, what we are going through and share those feelings and thoughts with others who may be experiencing the same just as you are. Our last Red Cross Blood Drive was a huge success!
Since May 11, 2023, the restrictions on the LGBTQIA+ community for donating blood were dropped.
This means that we can now donate blood and save a life.
Solano Pride center have been doing their part by partnering with the American Red Cross to serve this community with a blood drive.
We have already facilitated 2 blood drives. Thank you to those who have come out to donate! You are saving lives! Now, we need your help in ensuring that these blood drives can continue! The Benicia Public Library invites the community to a special Pride Month screening of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert on Tuesday, June 30.
This iconic, high-energy film follows two drag performers and a transgender woman as they journey across the Australian outback in a lavender bus, celebrating friendship, identity, and self-expression along the way. Known for its unforgettable costumes, humor, and heart, the film has become a beloved classic and a meaningful part of LGBTQ+ cultural history. The screening is rated R, and attendees under 17 must be accompanied by an adult.
In the spirit of the film, costumes are highly encouraged, and prizes will be awarded for the best looks of the evening. Guests are invited to come dressed to impress and celebrate Pride in style. Attendees are also encouraged to bring a favorite LGBTQ+ book title to swap, creating an opportunity to share stories and discover new reads within the community.

For four decades, our community has come together to walk in solidarity, remembrance, and hope. Since our very first steps in 1987, AIDS Walk San Francisco has raised critical funds for HIV prevention, care, and support services across the Bay Area. Generations of walkers, team captains, volunteers, and advocates have built this movement. We have only been able to achieve all of our successes, including raising over $100 million throughout the years, because of participants like you.
Now, in our 40th year, we are preparing to honor that legacy and want you to join us along the way.
We remember the early years, when fear and stigma were everywhere but our community showed up anyway. We celebrate the progress made through activism, research, and compassion. And we recommit ourselves to the work ahead because, as we know, the fight to end HIV is not over.

Bobby Jo Valentine’s music exists outside the lines of any genre, but the music’s thoughtful, spirit focused lyrics and catchy melodies reach listeners across all walks of life. The poetic nature and spiritual focus of his stories and songs has resulted in notable awards and a growing, loyal following around the country. He’s found a voice with original, hopeful songs about the gentle everyday spiritual awakenings of an openhearted life.
Growing up and emerging out of a Baptist Church of strict lines and sharp edges, Bobby Jo Valentine has emerged into a larger, kinder, more welcoming faith…one that is excited to learn, open to growth, and focused on love.
Along with theatres, house concerts, and many other kinds of stages, Bobby is often invited to offer his stories and songs at faith communities around the nation. Among others, he has been invited to perform for The Wild Goose Festival, the international Emerge Conference, and the 2017 General Synod of the United Church of Christ. His music has won Song of the Year twice at West Coast Songwriter’s Association, and his work has appeared on radio, TV, and feature films. He has performed artist residencies, hosted songwriting workshops, and been involved in helping communities of all types use their spaces and voice in more creative and powerful ways.
Bobby currently hails from Northern California, and is ecstatic any time he can discuss the big questions, challenge the easy answers, and inspire people to move closer to love.

Anti-Trans Sports Ban Fails to Qualify for November Maine Ballot: Maine’s Secretary of State announced this week that a proposed ban on transgender athletes playing sports would not appear on the November ballot following the discovery of signature fraud that disqualified thousands of petitions. The group spearheading the initiative, Protect Girls Sports in Maine, has filed an appeal with the Secretary of State's office. Similar anti-trans sports ballot initiatives in states like Missouri and Nevada may still make their states' ballots, pending signature verification.

Federal Judge Will Not Block Trump Vote-by-Mail Executive Order: U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols declined to stay an executive order from Donald Trump that tightens restrictions on mail-in voting. The executive order requires the U.S. Postal Service to only deliver mail-in ballots to voters on individual states' approved mail-in ballot lists. In his order, Nichols wrote that the plaintiffs — including high-ranking Democrats like Sen. Chuck Schumer — had brought the litigation too early and that no harms had been suffered as of yet.

California DOJ Report Outlines Deplorable Conditions at ICE Detention Facilities: The California Department of Justice, led by Attorney General Rob Bonta, issued its fifth report on the conditions of ICE detention facilities, revealing that they fail to meet ICE's own standards and fail to protect the basic rights, safety, and wellbeing of detainees. Tragically, there were six deaths of detainees between September 2025 and March 2026 — the highest number since DOJ started conducting reviews in 2017. These findings underscore the need for greater accountability and oversight.

Rhode Island Hospital Begins Turning Over Transition-Related Medical Records as DOJ Escalates Attacks: In response to a DOJ subpoena obtained from Texas, Rhode Island Hospital has begun sending some records of minors receiving transition-related care to the far-right judge who originally granted the DOJ's request. Judge Reed O'Connor, who has a history of anti-LGBTQ+ rulings, ordered the hospital send the records to him while they challenge the constitutionality of the subpoena. The DOJ's latest efforts signal an escalation in ongoing attacks against the transgender community.

Report: NIH Terminated Over 2,000 Health Equity Grants for BIPOC, LGBTQ Communities A new report released by the Lancet earlier this month revealed that between January-May 2025, the National Institute of Health terminated over 2,000 grants related largely to health equity in BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities. Administration officials have continually targeted all federal funding for minority populations since Trump's second inauguration in 2025.

Florida Lawmakers Agree to Reverse HIV/AIDS Cuts: The Florida legislature has reached a compromise that will restore eligibility standards and access to HIV medication, and reverse cuts to the AIDS Drug Assistance Program. The deal restores eligibility to 400% of the federal poverty level, reverses drug restrictions imposed by the Florida Department of Health, and provides $75 million to run the program. The agreement also restores access to medications that had been removed from coverage, including Biktarvy, a commonly prescribed HIV medication.

California Attorney General Joins Coalition Opposing Online Safety Bill: Rob Bonta, along with a coalition of 44 bipartisan attorneys general, sent a letter to Congress this week opposing the Kids Internet and Digital Safety (KIDS) Act, which would preempt state laws governing online safety and technology issues, including chatbots, and replace them with ineffective federal standards. “The KIDS Act not only fails to meaningfully protect kids, but also, imperils the significant progress California has made on this front," said Bonta.

Stephen Miller Takes Anti-Trans Swipe at Senate Candidate; Dems Swipe Back. Far-right extremist and Trump Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller posted a hateful anti-trans attack against Democratic Senate Candidate James Talarico on Tuesday. Talarico, himself a cisgender white man, has been outspoken in his support of LGBTQ+ equality and treating transgender people with dignity and respect. In response, the official X account for the Democratic Party fired off its reply: "shut up you ugly f*ck."

Kansas Judge Blocks Law Criminalizing Transgender Youth Healthcare: Douglas County District Judge Carl Folsom issued an injunction temporarily blocking a law criminalizing the provision of transition-related care for youth from going into effect. While this does not strike down the law outright, it does prevent enforcement while legal challenges remain pending. The Kansas legislature overrode Governor Laura Kelly's veto of the legislation in 2025, which blocks access to puberty blockers, hormone therapy, and transition-related surgeries for minors, and has been decried as one of the most expansive bans on transgender health care in the country.

- AB 1775 (Ward) — Support Transgender Veterans passed the Assembly by a vote of 64-1 on May 25, 2026.
- SB 1114 (Cabaldon) — Protect LGBTQ+ Data Privacy passed the Senate by a vote of 30-10 on May 26, 2026.
- AB 1540 (Gonzalez) — Restore LGBTQ+ 988 Crisis Support passed the Assembly by a vote of 56-8 on May 27, 2026.
- AB 1836 (Gabriel) — Enhance Safety for LGBTQ+ Community Events passed the Assembly by a vote of 78-0 on May 27, 2026.
- AB 1930 (Zbur) — Safeguard Patient Privacy from Out-of-State Investigations passed the Assembly by a vote of 60-17 on May 27, 2026.

Good afternoon Solano Pride Center team,
My name is Emerson Shiang and I am the research coordinator at UCSF’s Division of Prevention Science (Department of Medicine) for an older gay men’s study called Openly Gray, and an older trans women’s study called Matriarch. Earlier this year our study was cancelled by the federal government, and while our study has been reinstated, we are still at risk for being terming due to our population. Therefore, we are in a great rush to gather as many participants as we can and have expanded our reach from outside the 9 counties of the Bay Area to Santa Cruz, Fresno, and Sacramento.

Openly Gray is a NIH funded study that explores what contributes to health and wellbeing of aging gay men. Participants will go through an interview that includes a blood collection via finger prick, an online questionnaire, and a chance to refer friends to the study. They will receive a stipend of $100 for their participation and then for each friend they refer to the study they will receive an additional $25. We are looking to recruit gay, cis-men, ages 50 and over who live in the San Francisco Bay Area, Santa Cruz, Fresno, and Sacramento, and identify as Black/African American, Latino, or Asian & Pacific Islander. We have already reached our goal for White participants; so currently, we are not accepting White participants and are looking for individuals that identify as Black/African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, and Latino/Hispanic. The study can be done remotely over Zoom or in person at UCSF Mission Bay. Participation can be English or Spanish.
Matriarch is a supplemental grant we received off Openly Gray that will be looking at the same things but for older trans women. They will receive a stipend of $100 for their participation and then for each friend they refer to the study they will receive an additional $25. We are looking to recruit trans women, ages 50 and over who live in the San Francisco Bay Area, Santa Cruz, Fresno, and Sacramento, and identify as White, Black/African American, Latina/Hispanic, or Asian & Pacific Islander. The study can be done remotely over Zoom or in person at UCSF Mission Bay. Participation can be English or Spanish.
I will attach our flyers and palm cards to this email. People who are interested should just text or call the phone number, and leave their name, best phone number to contact, and say they learned about the study from Solano Pride Center. If you would like us to drop off hard copies of the materials, let us know and we would be happy to come by. Additionally, should you want a more in-depth presentation about the studies, we would be happy to do that as well.

 | | LGBTQ Pride (June): Gay pride or LGBT pride is the positive stance against discrimination and violence toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people to promote their self-affirmation, dignity, equality rights, increase their visibility as a social group, build community, and celebrate sexual diversity and gender variance. Pride, as opposed to shame and social stigma, is the predominant outlook that bolsters most LGBT rights movements throughout the world. Pride has lent its name to LGBT-themed organizations, institutes, foundations, book titles, periodicals and even a cable TV station and the Pride Library. Ranging from solemn to carnivalesque, pride events are typically held during LGBT Pride Month or some other period that commemorates a turning point in a country’s LGBT history, for example Moscow Pride in May for the anniversary of Russia’s 1993 decriminalization of homosexuality. Some pride events include LGBT pride parades and marches, rallies, commemorations, community days, dance parties, and large festivals, such as Sydney Mardi Gras, which spans several weeks.

June 12: Pulse Remembrance: June 12 marks the annual Pulse Night of Remembrance, honoring the 49 lives lost and the survivors, families, and first responders of the 2016 tragedy. Observed globally as "Orlando United Day – A Day of Love and Kindness," communities unite to promote compassion, resilience, and support for the LGBTQ+ and Latinx communities.
Key ways to observe and get involved locally and nationally:
· Attend the Ceremony: The City of Orlando hosts an annual community gathering and candlelight ceremony to read the 49 names. You can check the Pulse Orlando Events page for exact times, streaming details, and locations.
· Participate in the annual OneBlood remembrance drives, which run locally around June 12 to honor survivors and first responders
· Join individuals and businesses worldwide in performing acts of unity and service. You can find community-driven initiatives via the OneOrlando Alliance.
· Across the state of Florida, American and state flags are directed to be flown at half-staff in honor of the victims.

June 15: Anniversary of U.S. Supreme Court Bostock decision expanding protections to LGBTQ employees: June 15 marks the anniversary of the landmark 2020 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Bostock v. Clayton County. The 6-3 ruling established that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects LGBTQ employees from workplace discrimination by prohibiting employers from firing workers based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.
- Prior to this monumental win, federal protections were not explicitly clear, and workers in fewer than half of the states had established legal recourse. By finding that discrimination against gay or transgender individuals is inherently discrimination "because of sex," the ruling ensured that employees in all 50 states are protected.

June 26: Anniversary of U.S. Supreme Court legalizing marriage equality: June 26 marks the anniversary of the landmark 2015 U.S. Supreme Court decision Obergefell v. Hodges. In a 5-4 ruling, the Court declared that the fundamental right to marry is guaranteed to same-sex couples nationwide under the Fourteenth Amendment.
The historic ruling struck down state-level bans across the country, ensuring that same-sex couples have the same legal rights, benefits, and responsibilities as heterosexual couples in all 50 states and U.S. territories. It also mandated that states recognize lawful same-sex marriages performed in other jurisdictions.
- This ruling built upon earlier progress made in United States v. Windsor (2013), which struck down the federal Defense of Marriage Act. Together, these decisions represented a major milestone in the fight for LGBTQ+ civil rights in the United States

Stonewall Riots Anniversary (June 28th): The Stonewall riots were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the gay community against a police raid that took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City. They are widely considered to constitute the single most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for gay and lesbian rights in the United States.

June 30: Queer Youth of Faith Day: Queer Youth of Faith Day is celebrated annually on June 30th to affirm, uplift, and empower LGBTQ+ young people who hold religious or spiritual beliefs. Founded in 2020 by the multi-faith organization Beloved Arise, the day closes out Pride Month by sending a clear message: youth do not have to choose between their faith and their queer identity.
Key Aspects of the Day
· National Day of Prayer: A multi-faith initiative aimed at uniting people across traditions to pray for the safety and flourishing of LGBTQ+ youth.
· Story Amplification: Highlighting youth perspectives through essay contests, panels, and digital storytelling to foster belonging

Information from Food is Free Bay Area:
- We distribute food every week at several locations.
Tuesday and Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m. inside McCormack Hall at the Solano County Fairgrounds in Vallejo.
- Tuesdays from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Heritage Presbyterian Church in Benicia.
- Every Second and Fourth Saturday at mobile sites in Vacaville.
- Every Third Saturday at the Benicia Library from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Senior Food Box Program
We are proud to offer the Community Senior Food Box Program for Solano County Seniors aged 55 and older. Please come to our distributions to sign up for this program. Program proudly funded by Napa Solano Area Agency on Aging.
