Dedicated Volunteers

A BIG thanks goes out to our hardworking crew at a recent planting "party" at Hartwood Acres Park. With everyone's help, we installed more than 200 trees and bushes to help stabilize the banks of Little Pine Creek. Several groups participated including Friends of Hartwood, Fox Chapel Garden Club, Garden Club of Allegheny County, Penn State Master Gardeners, Tulco Labs and the Allegheny County Parks Department. Special thanks to Patagonia Pittsburgh for funding this project. Learn more about the ecology of Hartwood Acres Park.

Project Update

Our Chimney Swift Habitat Towers offer an excellent opportunity to educate the public about Parks Foundation projects through Interpretative Sign Installations that visitors can discover in all 9 county parks.These are examples of signs that our staff landscape architects recently designed and installed.  This sign project was funded by the PNC Charitable Trusts .

Interpretive signs recently installed in Harrison Hills Park detail some of the bird species that can be seen during a visit. Another panel describes the ways birds enhance our ecosystem .

This sign at Hartwood Acres Park i s one of several that offer details about riparian buffers. A riparian buffer is a wide strip of unmown land along stream banks that, among other benefits, prevents erosion.

Photography Contest Winner!

Three cheers and sincere thanks to photographer Mary McGettigan of Wexford who snapped this lovely wintery scene and submitted it to our photo contest. We put out a request for photos to feature on our holiday card and we selected Mary's among submissions from other excellent photographers. Mary caught the Latodami Nature Center in North Park at just the right moment following a fresh snowfall. We are always looking for photos of our nine Allegheny County Parks, so please share them with us all year long! Email your photos to Carole Smith if you want to see them featured.
