Protecting babies from hepatitis B:

International Prenatal Infection Awareness Month

February is International Prenatal Infection Awareness Month, a vital time to highlight the importance of hepatitis B screening during pregnancy. All pregnant women should be tested for hepatitis B to ensure their baby is protected at birth.

If a mother has hepatitis B, doctors can take the necessary steps to prevent transmission, including administering the hepatitis B birth dose vaccine and hepatitis B immune globulin (HBIG) immediately after delivery. These simple but crucial measures can safeguard a newborn from lifelong infection.

Cancer Prevention Month - protect against liver cancer

Liver cancer is on the rise, but prevention is possible. Chronic hepatitis B infection is a leading risk factor, making hepatitis B vaccination a critical tool in the fight against liver cancer.

The hepatitis B vaccine—the first-ever "anti-cancer" vaccine—prevents chronic infections and has dramatically reduced liver cancer cases worldwide. In the U.S., it is recommended for all infants, children, and adults up to age 59, with high-risk individuals over 60 also encouraged to get vaccinated.

Join us in taking a stand against liver cancer and hepatitis B—prevention starts with awareness and action! You can read more here.

New #BtheVoice storytellers from Uganda

share their journeys with hepatitis B

We are thrilled to introduce five new #BtheVoice storytellers from Uganda, in partnership with the National Organization for People Living with Hepatitis B. These inspiring individuals are breaking the silence around hepatitis B by sharing their experiences of diagnosis, stigma and resilience.

Geoffrey discovered he was born with hepatitis B during a medical checkup and, despite facing stigma and ineffective treatments, now manages his condition with proper guidance. Joseph struggled after being disqualified from a job due to his diagnosis but found hope through education and support. Naume was diagnosed during pregnancy and, with support from her doctor and husband, has learned that hepatitis B is manageable with the right care. Philip turned his shock into action by founding an organization to educate communities about hepatitis B. Susan initially took her diagnosis lightly but later realized the importance of medical care and encourages others to stay strong.

The Hepatitis B Foundation has launched a hepatitis delta survey, in order to better understand the experiences of people who living with hepatitis delta, from testing to diagnosis to management. We hope this will lead to a better understanding of the virus and help us advocate for better testing and treatment.

The survey should take less than 10 minutes to complete. There's an option to participate in a short interview to further discuss your experiences. The survey, which has been translated into 14 languages, can be found here.

If you have questions about the survey, please contact Beatrice Zovich, MPH, at beatrice.zovich@hepb.org.

New clinical trial opportunity available for people

living with chronic hepatitis B virus infection

Check out this new clinical trial opportunity! GSK is launching a phase 2b study called B-United, which will test a study drug called daplusiran/tomligisiran (DAP/TOM) followed by another study drug called bepirovirsen as a potential new treatment for chronic hepatitis B virus infection.

You may be eligible to participate in the B-United study if you:

  • Are at least 18 years old (the minimum age may be higher in some countries);
  • Have had diagnosed chronic hepatitis B infection documented for at least six months;
  • Have been on stable nucleoside/nucleotide analogue (NA) treatment (sometimes referred to as antivirals, such as tenofovir or entecavir) for the past 6 months, without any changes for the past 3 months.

If eligible, you will continue NA treatment and receive an investigational therapy that consists of:

  1. daplusiran/tomligisiran OR placebo for 24 weeks followed by
  2. bepirovirsen for 24 weeks

Following study treatment with daplusiran/tomligisiran (or placebo) and bepirovirsen, you will continue your NA treatment for 24 more weeks. The study doctor will then determine if you can stop your NA treatment and, if so, you will be off-NA treatment for up to 28 weeks while closely monitored by the study doctor.

The study is being run in many countries around the world.

Conclusion: "To reduce hepatitis B and liver cancer health disparities within heavily burdened groups, health education needs to be community-informed, culturally sensitive, and actionable. Study results can guide the development of culturally and linguistically appropriate education programs that focus on the link between hepatitis B and liver cancer and the need for vaccination and routine screening, and that are responsive to the knowledge gaps and misperceptions of diverse communities. The results also provide valuable insights for healthcare providers to improve the knowledge gaps of the diverse patient populations that they serve."
