Hello ,

At Opal Creek, we believe every child deserves the magic of a high-quality outdoor school experience – the chance to study temperate rainforest ecosystems, bond with classmates under a forest canopy, and deepen their own connection to the natural world.

Today, we are reaching out because the quality and accessibility of these experiences are at risk, and we need your voice to help protect them.

The State of Outdoor School

Oregon's statewide Outdoor School program is currently facing significant challenges. Last year, the program was hit with an unexpected 20% funding cut as part of sweeping state cuts. Now, an additional 7% cut is being proposed for the short legislative session. While Outdoor School will continue to exist, these cumulative cuts force schools to select providers based solely on cost, rather than on educational outcomes. At Opal Creek, we offer more than just a camp experience we deliver immersive, science-based, culturally-oriented programming which students love, and where they thrive. We believe every student deserves the full, transformative experience that only dedicated programs can provide.

See Our Impact in Action

To remind us all why this program is so beloved, we are thrilled to share our brand-new Opal Creek AFC Outdoor School video. It captures the joy, curiosity, and transformation that happens when students step out of the classroom and into the woods.

How You Can Help: A Direct Ask

You can help by contacting your legislators today to advocate for the restoration of these critical funds. Representative Zach Hudson has introduced HB 4112, a bill to restore $6 million to Outdoor School funding for the 2026-2027 school year.

What to say: Friends of Outdoor School has provided a simple script you can use when writing or calling your representatives:

  • Outdoor School is important to me because...
  • Outdoor School is already reeling from the 20% cuts the Legislature made in June, 2025
  • Reject further cuts to Outdoor School
  • Voters were clear with Measure 99 – 4% of Lottery revenue for kids to attend Outdoor School
  • Ask your legislator if they will support Rep. Hudson's legislation (HB 4112) to restore $6 million in Outdoor School funding for 2026
  • If they are a co-sponsor, thank them for their important support! (See the list of co-sponsors here.)
