Let me introduce you to Erin Merryn.
Sexually abused and raped from ages 6 to 8 by an adult neighbour, Erin was threatened to stay silent by her abuser. After her parents decided to move, Erin’s abuse ended but only brought her that much closer to her next abuser, an older teenage cousin who lived down the street. Her older cousin sexually abused her from ages 11 to 13 years old. He threatened her to stay silent, so she kept her secrets locked away in her childhood diary.
Erin Merryn is a childhood sexual abuse survivor turned author, speaker, child advocate and activist. Erin is the founder and president of Erin’s Law, and is on a mission to persuade all 50 states to pass Erin’s Law, which mandates that all public schools use age-appropriate curricula to teach students how to tell on anyone who touches or attempts to touch their private parts.
According to Erin, as a parent, you have probably talked to your child about strangers. Reality is over 90% of the time children are being abused by someone they know and trust. You teach your kids to look both ways when crossing the street. Yet many parents do not talk to their children about personal body safety. Your children are more likely to be molested than hit by a car.
When should you start talking to your kids about personal body safety? As early as the age of two. A good time to do this is when bathing your toddler. Explain to them their private parts and that nobody should touch them their unless it is mommy or daddy helping to clean them. An age-appropriate concept for a young child to understand is that nobody including a parent or caregiver – should see or touch their private parts unless they’re keeping them clean, safe, or healthy. A great way to explain this is the areas covered by your swimsuit.
We love this young mother's heart and passion to protect children. Erin is making a huge difference, and the ripple effect is spreading. Together, let's advocate for this awareness training to be taught in our homes, schools, community programs and churches.
