A study from Nutrition Reviews found that during the treatment process, probiotic supplementation positively affect reductions in probing pocket depth and bleeding on probing in people with periodontitis (inflammatory gum disease).

Probiotics significantly improve symptoms in children with functional abdominal pain disorders. Specific strains - Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, Bifidobacterium mixtures, and B. longum demonstrated the most consistent efficacy, as reported in Frontiers in Nutrition.

Warning: Counterfeit, Adulterated Supplements Online

On the internet, especially at Amazon, there is an epidemic of counterfeit, adulterated, and purposely mislabeled dietary supplements. Recent analyses of methyl vitamin B12 supplements sold on Amazon found only 56% met label claim. Only 14 of 35 oregano oil brands met label claim. A study from JAMA Network Open found that half of immune products analyzed from Amazon had labels that did not match the contents. Amazingly, a man was arrested for selling counterfeit Pure Encapsulations products. Know your supplier!

Protein Type and Depression

Steve: Furthering the burgeoning field of nutritional psychiatry, two new studies have linked the form of protein you consume with depression risk.

A study from Nutrition Reviews examined the risk of depression in subjects consuming predominately animal protein or plant protein. Those who consumed animal protein showed significantly less depression.

The second study from Nutrients found that despite no association among men, women consuming predominately animal protein demonstrated a 36% lower likelihood of having depression. Additionally, male and female participants older than 65 years presented a significant trend toward lower likelihoods of depression associated with animal protein intake.

Please note that this research only compared protein sources. It is not a moratorium on all plant foods. Fruit and vegetables especially, have been consistently associated with better mental health and reduced risk of depression due to the range and diversity of biochemical and bioavailable nutrients. Do not let this dissuade you from consuming copious amounts of plant foods.
