Valentine’s Events:

Heart the Cart and Fun Lunch

Upper School’s (5th-12th Grade) Heart the Cart Day is almost here! This Friday, February 9, we will find (silly) ways to honor these humble pieces of educational luggage. (We celebrate big backpacks, too - nobody is left out!) House points will be awarded for:

  • Cart decorating: Decorate your cart in any way you wish.
  • Cart performances: Cart-inspired song parodies, videos, poems, art, skits are all encouraged!
  • Please remember that there is a time limitation this year of two minutes if you are entering a song parody, skit, or video.

Please submit your entry to Mrs. Jackson by tomorrow, February 6 at 8 am.

Next Tuesday, February 13, we’ll have our Valentine’s Day Fun Lunch. Students may wear Valentine-themed clothes (red, pink, hearts) or Providence t-shirts and jeans or uniform bottoms.

Parents, you’ll love the smiles you receive if you join us and help serve our Chick-fil-A Fun Lunch. Sign up here to help. Note that this Fun Lunch is on a Tuesday.

Teacher Appreciation Week, Feb. 19-23

Mark your calendars for Teacher Appreciation Week, earlier this year to avoid some of the May craziness! We will take dedicated time to esteem our Providence teachers on February 19-23. Please talk with your children about ways to show honor to our fantastic faculty members. We have an opportunity for parents and students to staff and provide food for a potluck on Tuesday, February 20.

ERB Test Make Up Days, Feb. 6-9

While making up ERB tests is not required, the information gained from the assessment scores is a valuable tool, informing co-teachers and teachers regarding student academic progress. If your student has or will miss an ERB test, we’d like to help them make it up. For students who have a scheduled study hall, we will reach out to help them complete tests during that time or you can sign up for one of our make up test sessions. Sign up for ERB make up tests here.

Food for Thought

"When we read that 'education is a life,' we are invited to explore all the nuances of a comparison between a growing physical life and a growing mental and spiritual life. Does the body have a variety of physical needs which must be met with proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals? So, too, the mind requires variety. Does the body need regular meals at decent intervals so that it has time to digest what has been taken in? So does the mind. Does the body become surfeited by over-feeding and need respite? The mind does likewise. Does the body lose its appetite for healthy, nourishing food if it is indulged too often with sweets? The mind also can be enticed by entertainment.

"Almost every principle of healthy eating for the body can find a corresponding application in the idea that the mind is a spiritual organism which requires a healthy diet of ideas. If we take this concept as seriously as Charlotte Mason intends us to, we will not neglect to nourish our children’s minds any more than we would neglect to provide them with regular, adequate meals."

Checks may be made to Providence, and payment may be dropped off at the North Desk in envelopes labeled “JCL Area Competition.” Contact Mr. Wade to register for events. Come help us win a team award this year!

Trades Day, Feb. 28

The BSWH Trauma Program, Craftsman Center, and the Taylor Chamber of Commerce are organizing an upcoming Trades Day on Wednesday, February 28, from 9:00am to 2:00pm in Taylor, TX. This is an event specifically for 8th - 12th graders to experience interactive career exploration provided by employers. This is somewhat different than typical career days as it is focused primarily on trades and the vendors are actual employers across the continuum of trade job opportunities. Companies such as Samsung, Tesla, BSWH, and many more will be available to talk with students. Click here to register; although parents are encouraged to attend with their students, students may also make plans to go themselves (just note “0” for number of chaperones attending). Please reach out to Mr. Hedderly with any questions.

Providence Profiles

Tasha Heisch

Third Grade

Mrs. Heisch has a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Baylor University. She has taught at Providence since 2014.

Teaching the grammar stage of classical education excites me. I love the picture that, during this stage, students are sponges because they soak up knowledge and are naturally excited to learn. All our lessons tie into this idea, especially our memory work throughout the curriculum. Seeing connections made when their new learning is tied to previous knowledge is priceless. For example, reviewing cycle 4 history pegs while reading Farmer Boy gives the students a deeper understanding of the story and the historical time period.

I have grown to love the relationship with co-teachers. I am consistently humbled by co-teachers’ vulnerability to open their lives to me. I love seeing the different ways God is constantly at work to accomplish His purposes. I also love seeing God’s grace that is extended on both sides and the understanding that we are all serving the Lord and learning together. Furthermore, seeing firsthand the sacrifices co-teachers make for their children to bring them up in the Lord is impactful.

I love bringing God into all conversations and being able to guide character formation by applying His word to the content we are learning and to conversations while shepherding children’s hearts. Also, leading young image-bearers to be awed by God is an honor.”

Sharon Teter

Algebra and Geometry

Mrs. Teter has a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from Texas Tech University. She has taught at Providence since 2021.

I have loved Classical Christian Education for many years. It is the best model for helping students learn to reason logically and express themselves winsomely, preparing them not only to stand firm in their faith, but also to effectively share the gospel of Christ.

Math is a beautiful subject for sharing truth, beauty, and goodness. Most recently, we were dividing line segments proportionally in Geometry. It was the perfect opportunity to discuss the divine proportion which includes the golden ratio. We were able to see how this leads to the golden spiral which is displayed in everything from DNA strands to the designs of the galaxy. It was a beautiful way to demonstrate the truth of scripture and the goodness of our Creator.

In Algebra, we have worked with linear functions and their domains and ranges. Since we are discussing 1 Corinthians 13 in chapel, it led to a fun discussion of faith, hope, and love including their domain and range related to our time on earth as well as in heaven. Which one has an infinite domain and range? Why?

While the classroom is my place of greatest joy, on home days I have the pleasure of working with students as a tutor for their homework lessons. It is such a blessing to be able to support both the students and the co-teachers in this way.

As a Christian educator, it is a privilege to be able to help students see the relationships between what they are learning and how it applies to their purpose. As a part of our daily liturgy, we include the Biblical purpose of mathematics - to reveal the invisible attributes of God, to aid man in fulfilling both God’s mandate of dominion, as well as the mandate of worldwide evangelism. In all things, it is for the glory of God alone – Soli Deo Gloria.”
