WHOLE SCHOOL NEWS

We’re excited about starting our second semester of the year and look forward to seeing you tomorrow!

What to Expect

Are you wondering what’s around the corner for your student in the upcoming school year? Check out this What to Expect compilation document, which contains overviews for each of our Grammar School (PK-6th) grades, as well as Logic (7th-8th) and Rhetoric (9th-12th) course descriptions.

ID Badges

As stated in our ID Badge Policy, we ask all parents to wear their ID badges while on campus, whether dropping off and picking up their students or serving as a volunteer. Since wearing a parent ID badge is not optional, staff and administrators will ask parents without badges to sign out a visitor badge at any of our entrances if they intend to remain on campus. Thank you for continuing to support our measures to enhance safety on our campus during school hours.

First Spring Informational Meeting, Tuesday, Jan. 23

Admissions season is about to be in full swing so invite any friends who are considering applying to Providence to our first informational meeting of the spring: Tuesday, January 23, from 6:30-8:00 (website, Facebook). No RSVP is required.

Donuts with Dads and Rock Ceremony, Jan. 25

Dads, join us at 8:00 a.m. on Jan. 25 for chapel and donuts. Fathers of 4th or 8th graders, take particular note: we have a special 4th/8th grade rock ceremony at this time, where fathers present special rocks to their children.

New Chapel Handbook

Our 3rd Quarter Chapel Handbook, linked here and on the sidebar, is focused on the “greatest of all” theological virtues: love. At school, we’ll be listening and singing along to a musical setting of 1 Corinthians 13 (ESV) by the Corner Room that will hopefully help us memorize the Scripture passage (“The Way of Love”). If you’d like to listen to it at home, you can find it on Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you stream music.

Providence Wristbands

Want something fun to wear to show school spirit? Come grab a Providence wristband at the North Desk for just $1 each; buy five, and you'll receive an extra one for free! We will not be listing these online and will accept cash only. (Please note that the Providence dress code states, “One bracelet and/or one set of girls’ earrings may be worn at a time - not multiples.”)

2024-2025 Online Applications

Applications for the 2024-2025 school year are live through the Blackbaud Resources page, and Providence families are welcome to submit an application for siblings at any grade level. We have already begun processing applications for kindergarten siblings, and we will begin reviewing completed applications for other grade levels tomorrow and will schedule assessments in the coming weeks. There is a priority deadline of January 19, 2024 for all grades, as we want to prioritize our current families before working with new ones. As always, if you are interested in applying, we encourage you to do so early. Please reach out to Dr. Baird if you have any questions!

GRAMMAR SCHOOL NEWS

Upper Grammar (5th and 6th Grade) Friday Schedule Changes

Fifth and Sixth graders will have a slight schedule change on Fridays in this new semester. Fifth graders will enjoy more time with our music teacher, Mrs. Zaida Tidwell, for choral music on Fridays. Through this weekly 30 minute class, students will experience meaningful historic hymns and apply musical elements and theory. Sixth graders will grow in nature appreciation and artistic expression through Mrs. Sheri Kasberg’s nature journaling course.  If you are a new student, please bring a new nature journal; these were on the booklist given in the summer, but should you need one, here is the site.  We will have returning student journals at school.

Speech Meet 2024

Each year K-6th grade students participate in a school-wide Speech Meet that provides students the chance to grow in communication skills to speak clearly and expressively with poise and confidence. Students are introduced to quality speech pieces both during the selection process and as they hear other students present in class. These experiences help lay a foundation for rhetoric training in future years. Some parents have asked about guidelines so they may begin making selections over the holidays. Please see this document for more information on Speech Meet including tips, lists of selections, and a timeline.

SECONDARY SCHOOL NEWS

Rhetoric students in the Missiology elective were treated to a presentation by Miss Natalie Arauco, missionary in Guatemala, Mr. Colon, mission pastor, and alumna Faith Cox, who has been preparing for mission work in South Asia this summer.

Providence Profiles

Andy Davis,

Bible (Spiritual Disciplines)

Pastor Davis graduated from Georgia Tech then earned an MDiv from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and was later awarded an Honorary Doctor of Humanities Degree by the University of Mary Hardin Baylor. He has taught at Providence since 2021.

“I am excited about the fact that Providence offers, not just classical education, but Christian classical education. I love hearing students discuss what they are learning in other classes about our amazing and creative God. As the Eleventh grade Bible teacher, it is thrilling on a daily basis to engage our fantastic students in discussions about things of eternal value. I have learned so much from listening to our students. They have much to say that is worth hearing.

It is encouraging in our current culture to share with students who have a thirst for knowing God. I am so thankful that class time is not a “lecture” from a teacher but a conversation with respectful teens who challenge each other and me to practice the spiritual disciplines of our Christian faith as we move toward godliness.

The particular lessons that I will remember are the ones happening near the end of the semester as students share the spiritual journey on which God is taking them. To listen to 16 and 17 year-olds share freely about their faith and growth in Jesus is a real privilege.

We are all aware of educational institutions in our culture today where parental questions and input are not welcome. At Providence, it is just the opposite. Not only are parents' comments and questions welcome, but parents are the co-teachers! That is biblical. And, that is exactly what our nation's founders had in mind.

[Being a Christian teacher at Providence means that ] I am free to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. One of our textbooks is the Bible. I teach students who believe in being respectful to one another and respectful to faculty and staff, and honoring of home and church. I have the high privilege of praying with students every class day. It doesn’t get any better than that."
