Good morning,
This month we join millions of others across the country in honoring two groups of people who deserve special thanks and recognition. The first is nurses — those everyday heroes improving the health, wellness and longevity of not only their patients but all of us. Please read on for more in our article below!
The second group is near and dear to our hearts and organizational mission: the 55.8 million Americans ages 65 and older.
May is Older Americans Month (OAM), an observance established in 1963 to recognize the contributions of older adults to our country and communities. It was also designated as a way to bring awareness to the challenges Americans faced in older age and improve their condition in society.
In the 61 years since OAM's designation, policy and public health measures have grown alongside non-profit and community-based organizations serving older adults — all focused on improving the lives of older Americans. And while much has been accomplished, there is always more we can do!
In FCA's 40+ years, we've worked with caregivers of all ages — in fact, this year they've ranged in age from 22 to 96! We are in awe of all of them and the many other caregivers across the country, but for OAM we'd like to especially honor the older Americans who are actively caregiving for a friend or family member. Their contributions, commitment and generosity are admirable and incredibly valuable!
This month, please join us in recognizing and celebrating the older Americans among us. And read on for a round-up of resources designed for them and the caregivers who support them!

Celebrating Older Americans Month
|
The theme for this year's OAM is "Powered by Connection," in recognition of the importance of social connections, friendships and meaningful relationships on health and well-being.
When relationships and social connections dwindle, isolation and loneliness can easily set in. This can affect not only older adults but also the family caregivers who care for them.
FCA offers abundant resources for caregivers and those they care for to help find connection, support and actionable steps to improve their mental and physical health and well-being:
-
From our Caregiver Resources Page, click on Caring for Yourself, where caregivers can find dozens of articles, resources and webinars to boost their mental health. Some of our all-time most popular resources are:
-
Visit our Support Groups page to check out available support groups offering caregivers an opportunity to connect with others, share their experiences and find community. Please note we have groups designed for young adult caregivers and LGBTQ caregivers.
-
Caregivers can always reach out to FCA by phone or online for personalized support, resources and expert assistance.

Honoring and Thanking Nurses
This is National Nurses Month, a time to honor and celebrate nurses and the invaluable work they do. From ER rooms and pediatric offices to discharge desks, community health organizations and research centers, nurses play a vital role in improving and promoting the health of individuals and the pubic. We salute their innumerable contributions and thank them for their dedication, commitment and patient-centered care every day!
If you're a nurse, we thank you! We also invite you to check out our family caregiver screening toolkit. It provides two easy questions to identify caregivers among your patients and clients — and connects them with free, expert resources to better support them.
