New Partnership with Attend Behavior

The Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Use Services (DMHDDSUS), in collaboration with Trillium Health Resources, has partnered with Attend Behavior to deliver innovative, technology-enabled caregiver support across 46 counties. This initiative will bring immediate, virtual access to evidence-based family guidance and parent training for families of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD).

Backed by Trillium’s investment in improving access to care, this partnership represents a strategic effort to address the critical shortage of direct support professionals in North Carolina while ensuring children and their caregivers receive timely, high-quality intervention. Trillium currently serves 38,502 children across the state who are diagnosed with behavioral health conditions, Autism, and/or I/DD.

News Release

New Dashboard Shows Importance of Peers in Mental Health Wellness and Substance Use Recovery

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services announced the release of a new dashboard highlighting the success of North Carolina’s Peer Warmline. The Warmline is a free resource for people experiencing emotional difficulty, mental health issues, substance use challenges, or for those who just need to talk with someone who understands what they are going through. Since launch, warmline counselors have received more than 67,000 calls, and 99% of callers who responded to a recent survey expressed satisfaction with the support they received.

"Mental Health matters to all of us, and we are committed to ensuring everyone who needs care can access that care when they need it and in the setting that is most appropriate for them," said NC Health and Human Services Secretary Dev Sangvai. "For many, having the opportunity to speak with a Peer Support Specialist is critical in their wellness journey, and these numbers show how effective this resource is in North Carolina."

Trillium Providing Funds for National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Guilford Hub

Trillium Health Resources is providing $150,000 to help develop the NAMI Guilford Hub. NAMI Guilford serves residents across Greensboro and High Point and surrounding areas with free mental health support, online groups, resources and education.

There are an estimated 500,000 people in Guilford County who could use mental health services. Navigating the system can be overwhelming and isolating, and NAMI Guilford currently has no physical location to support people on their journey to mental wellness.

The NAMI Guilford Hub will guide individuals and families through the behavioral health system, provide innovative approaches to services and improve access to care. The dedicated space will be utilized for evidence-based programs and education to reduce stigma, promote early intervention and expand access to resources. NAMI Guilford will continue to empower and engage individuals and families with lived experience as they create this welcoming space to simplify resource navigation and ultimately support individuals, families, loved ones, and communities.

Trillium providing $3M for Technology-Empowered Apartment Living in partnership with Easterseals PORT Health

Trillium Health Resources is providing $3,000,000 to Easterseals PORT Health to help develop independent living apartments at Francis’ Cove. The apartments will include smart technology features for convenience, comfort, and security. Smart technology is rapidly transforming how we live, and its integration into apartments offers significant benefits for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities (I/DD), and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

The land for Francis’ Cove was donated to Easterseals PORT Health by the late Monty Recoulley, in memory of his brother Francis, to assure people with intellectual disabilities have the opportunity to live independently.

“We are grateful to Trillium for partnering with us to make Monty’s big dream for Francis’ Cove Apartments a reality. Monty believed his late brother Francis (Butch) could have thrived in a supportive, independent environment - if only that had been an option during his lifetime. Francis’ Cove independent SMART apartments will provide a safe, nurturing environment, and Easterseals PORT services will help each resident thrive at home and in the community,” commented Luanne Welch, CEO of Easterseals PORT Health.

Supporting Mental Health for Older Adults

The mental health conditions of older adults are often underrecognized and undertreated. Approximately 14% of adults aged 60 and over live with a mental health issue. Globally, more than a quarter of deaths from suicide (27%) are among people in that age group.

To help bridge this gap in care, DMH/DD/SUS is working to increase awareness of, and access to mental health support for older adults. The following initiatives offer support for older adults and their families:

  • NAMI Family-to-Family is an educational program for families, significant others and friends of people with mental health conditions.

  •  Healthy Aging is a program by the Kellin Foundation aimed at enhancing the quality of life for older adults and their caregivers serving Guilford and surrounding counties.

New Opportunities

Trillium Provider Network Survey

For Technical Assistance, Education, and Training Topics

The Trillium Network Management team wants to continue to ensure that we provide technical assistance and education on a variety of topics that are relevant and important to our Provider Network. Since February 2025, we have been conducting monthly Provider Forums and addressing items that our providers identified in the Fall 2024 provider survey.

Your input is important to us to make sure that we are meeting your needs, and expectations. We have three quick questions that will not take more than a minute to complete. The purpose of these questions is to assist us in continuing to develop and providing technical assistance on topics that are relevant for you and your organization. Also, our goal is to improve our customer service. This survey will be available through June 6.

Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment (EPSDT)

Trillium Health Resources is committed to providing preventative health screenings and improving the overall health of children enrolled in our plan. With the high proportion of children in our population, our ability to impact the incidence of Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic, and Treatment (EPSDT) screening is vital to the overall health and well-being of our members.

The EPSDT service is a Medicaid mandated program under the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1989 (OBRA 89) and section 1905(r)(5) of the Social Security Act (the Act). EPSDT includes periodic health (nutritional) and development history, physical exams, immunizations, laboratory tests, health education, vision, dental, and hearing services. The EPSDT program has two primary objectives:

  1. Assuring the availability and accessibility of required health care resources; and
  2. Helping Medicaid members and their parents or guardians effectively use these resources. It encourages assessment of the child's health needs through initial and periodic examinations and evaluations, and promotes early diagnosis and treatment of problems before they become more complex and costly.

Trillium will cover regular wellness visits to all children enrolled in Medicaid under the age of 21 to allow health care providers to carefully monitor a child's overall health and development and to identify and address health concerns as early as possible, in compliance with the Department's standards for the timely provision of EPSDT services.

Trillium will also cover services, products, or procedures for our Medicaid members under the age of 21 if the service is medically necessary to correct or ameliorate a defect, physical or mental illness, or a condition or health problem identified through a screening examination (includes any evaluation by a physician or other licensed practitioner).
