Trillium Health Resources Supports School-Based Therapy in Hyde County

Trillium Health Resources has signed a memorandum of agreement with Hyde County Schools and Southeastern Integrated Care. Students will be able to receive mental health services during the school day, minimizing barriers to health care and promoting academic and social success.

“Integrating behavioral health support directly into schools ensures that students receive the care they need in a familiar and accessible setting,” stated Nancy Leach, Director of Student Services with Hyde County Schools. “While mental health care is valued by many in our county, for families dealing with the challenges of living in economic distress, such as food insecurity or economic instability, mental health care often feels like a luxury. Considering the current mental health crisis, strengthening the mental health support network within our schools is the only way we will help our students develop the skills they need to thrive academically and beyond.”

North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) Begins Capacity Restoration Services at Wake County Detention Center

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and the Wake County Sheriff’s Office are partnering to offer additional services for defendants with mental illness whom the court has determined Incapable to Proceed (ITP) to trial. Building on the success of NC RISE in Mecklenburg and Pitt Counties, the program in Wake County is part of the department’s continued work to ensure the right behavioral health care is available at the right time for all North Carolinians.

People who are deemed ITP require services to restore their ability to understand and continue trial proceedings. The additional NC RISE program at the Wake County Detention Center will allow ITP criminal defendants who are not eligible to access community-based services to receive treatment within the detention center.

"By making capacity restoration services available in detention centers and communities, we are able to get people the care they need faster and moving through the judicial process more quickly," said NC Health and Human Services Secretary Dev Sangvai. "This effort builds on our existing work to improve capacity restoration in North Carolina and invest in health care strategies that break costly cycles where folks get stuck in the justice system."

Mounting Evidence Shows the Mental Health Collaborative Care Model in Primary Care Reduces Suicide

Three key studies have demonstrated the importance of the Collaborative Care Model (CoCM) in reducing suicide risk, attempts and deaths. These studies are outlined in a new Issue Brief by the Bowman Family Foundation. In October 2024 NCDHHS invested $5 million to help providers implement CoCM services in primary care offices across the state.

Through the CoCM, primary care providers work with an integrated behavioral health case manager and a psychiatric consultant to monitor and treat patients for mild to moderate behavioral health conditions. It is designed to serve people early on by supporting primary care providers in reaching people at the onset of behavioral health symptoms.

Two of the studies in the brief showed reductions in suicide risk for over 50% of “at risk” patients receiving CoCM services. The third study found a 25% reduction in suicide attempts and deaths among more than 225,000 primary care patients who were treated using key elements of CoCM. For more information how the CoCM can help save lives, attend the upcoming webinar, Reducing Suicide Risk Through Primary Care on May 8 at 2:00PM.
