According to the AHCCCS Covered Behavioral Health Service Guide:
Behavioral Health Professionals (BHPs) (Independently licensed BHPs who are eligible for AHCCCS enrollment are independent billers) are required to register with AHCCCS per AMPM Policy 610. A BHP who is an independent biller is only allowed to use their own NPI as servicing/rendering provider to bill for behavioral health services that they personally and directly provided. In accordance with the Provider Participation Agreement, AHCCCS does not permit a BHP to bill for behavioral health services under their own NPI for services provided by another person with the exception of PT BC in accordance with AMPM Policy 320-S Behavior Analysis Services and Arizona Revised Statutes (ARS) 32-2091.3
The Provider Type 01 cannot be a rendering provider.
A non-registrable provider type is an individual who does not meet the criteria or qualifications to register individually with AHCCCS under a specific provider type.
Common non-registrable behavioral health practitioners are:
- Associate level BHP
- Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) and,
- Behavioral Health Paraprofessional (BHPP).
Non-registerable providers can only provide and bill for services under a licensed agency (provider type 77, IC or 05). If a provider does not have a licensed clinic, services provided by non-registerable providers are not billable.
