Dear Child Care Provider,

You are on the front lines of Mississippi’s child care crisis, and your voice and your vote matter now more than ever.

The recent Supreme Court decision in Louisiana v. Callais has triggered a special redistricting session that could shape who represents our communities, and ultimately, what policies get prioritized.

Why This Matters for Child Care

The challenges you are facing—staffing shortages, funding gaps, families on waitlists—are the result of policy decisions made by elected officials.

Representation matters. When communities are fairly represented, lawmakers are more likely to:

  • Invest in child care assistance
  • Support providers
  • Address workforce challenges

What’s at Stake

  • Continued underfunding of the Child Care Payment Program (CCPP)
  • More families unable to access care
  • Increased pressure on providers to operate without sufficient support

What You Can Do

As a trusted leader in your community, you can help bridge the gap between families and civic engagement:

✔ Encourage parents to check their voter registration status

✔ Share how child care impacts your ability to stay open and serve families

✔ Talk about why voting matters in shaping policy that has a direct impact on child care

✔ Stay informed about the special session and upcoming elections

Child care is essential infrastructure, and voting is how we ensure that infrastructure is supported. Join us at one of our Civic Engagement Training Workshops. The next one is May 16th in Biloxi. RSVP now by emailing us at info@mschildcare.org.

We’ll continue providing tools, resources, and opportunities to help you stay engaged and informed. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us. Together, we can make sure Mississippi families—and the child care system they depend on—are not left behind.

ABOUT MLICCI
In Mississippi, one of the biggest barriers to employment for low-income single moms is access to child care. Because we believe that no mother should have to choose between the job she needs and the child she loves, MLICCI works to improve the state’s child care assistance program and strengthen the financial viability of the child care centers that serve low-income mothers.
