CCB Helps Client Step Outside

Her Comfort Zone

Nicole*, a woman in her early thirties, began working with a therapist at Catholic Charities Bloomington (CCB) over a year ago. Nicole had experienced various forms of trauma and struggled with significant panic attacks and severe agoraphobia (fear of unfamiliar environments).

At CCB, Nicole and her therapist employed several therapeutic modalities to help her meaningfully improve her quality of life, including EMDR (an evidence-based approach to help individuals change how they process trauma), somatic-based stress-reduction techniques, and internal family systems approaches.

Though she previously struggled to leave her home, Nicole has resumed activities like driving and shopping. Nicole's work with CCB has also helped her achieve a sense of safety on walks outside of her home, which she has committed to doing regularly as an investment in her mental health.

Grant Provides Access to Telehealth

Catholic Charities Bloomington is committed to making high-quality mental health care as accessible as possible, and our telehealth program is a major component of this commitment. Telehealth helps clients who lack access to transportation or live in rural communities with little availability of care. However, it also allows CCB therapists to offer truly trauma-informed care, letting clients receive treatment in a space that is comfortable and familiar. Telehealth also lets clients fit therapy into their busy schedules, allowing them to take lunch-hour or daytime appointments they might not otherwise be able to accommodate. Many clients at CCB have benefitted from telehealth:

  • A CCB client had a rare side effect to a medication that resulted in a weeklong hospital stay, and the experience caused his anxiety to flare up considerably. The client knew that working with his CCB therapist would help him process his anxiety and feel more relaxed. The session occurred remotely, while the client was still hospitalized.

  • Several clients have been able to continue weekly sessions while traveling to visit relatives in other parts of Indiana. Spending time around extended family can be a stressful experience for many, and by taking an hour to de-stress and process their emotions, many clients are able to have more enjoyable visits and build stronger connections with their families.

Providing high-quality mental health care via telehealth requires video-conferencing software, secure online medical record and messaging software, and other technological infrastructure. Catholic Charities Bloomington is grateful to the Bloomington City Council Jack Hopkins Social Services Committee for their 2023 grant to CCB to help make this service available to our clients.
