A Prayer for Thanksgiving
Land Acknowledgement Prayer
On this feast of gratitude, I/we begin by giving thanks for the people whose land I/we stand on: [one designated participant names the Indigenous communities]. May I/we be ever aware of the history of this place, the people who have loved its earth, their toil, and how we are bound to one another through our creation and belovedness. In our thankfulness for this current day, may we be aware of the truth of our history, the injustices that have occurred on this earth against those who first loved it, and the pains of the past that remain to this day. In this awareness, may our gratitude for Indigenous people make us committed to not repeating this history. Amen.

Gender and Sexuality GC Resolution Round-Up
November 10, 2023, 7-8 pm ET / 6-7 pm CT
Inviting all people to join us for conversation about General Convention resolutions that focus on gender and sexuality. LGBTQ+ Caucus members Charles Graves IV and Jon Rania will share how and why the Caucus started and the good work it did during the 80th General Convention.

Young Adult Fellowship
Application Open
Plainsong Farm & Ministry seeks to cultivate connections between people, places, and God by creating a place that nurtures belonging and the radical renewal of God’s world. We do this through growing food for people and people for God. Plainsong offers farm-based education and farm-based faith formation for people of all ages. But nurturing young adults is at the heart of our work.
Plainsong Farm is a living laboratory where young adults can experiment with how to pray, rest, belong, grow, serve, and play. Plainsong’s young adult fellows grow food for local pantries, help out with farm camp, host volunteers, care for the land, and share stories from the farm. This ten month fellowship program for adults, ages 21-32, offers immersive experiences and education in small-scale regenerative agriculture, spiritual practice, and communal living.

Apply for the Ecumenical Center for Clergy Spiritual Renewal (ECCSR) program
Check out a great retreat opportunity for clergy renewal.
- We are recruiting a MIDWESTERN REGIONAL COHORT – for pastors whose churches are within a 4-5 hour drive from Holy Wisdom.
- The cohort commitment is for ONE YEAR – with ongoing opportunities to participate in renewal events and conversations beyond their cohort year.
- We will be hosting THREE RETREATS during their cohort year:
a. 8 days in the Summer of 2023
b. 6 days in the Winter of 2024
c. 3 days in the Summer of 2024
We look forward to receiving your responses to the questions on the application. To help us identify pastors for the cohort, we encourage you to consider writing up to 500 words – and no fewer than 250 words – per question.

Constable Grant
There was an error in last month's newsletter. Note the corrected dates. (It's not too late.)
Applications are due by 11/11/22 to the provincial office for review. Email Heather.
The Constable Fund provides grants to fund mission initiatives that were not provided for within the budget of The Episcopal Church as approved by General Convention 2018, with a stated preference for work in the area of religious education. Read about the details and view the application.
The process in Province V:
- Prepare your grant request in a word processing document, following the application form.
- Submit your request to the Provincial office by Nov 11, 2022.
- The Grant Review Committee will consider all applications and choose one to be submitted.
- All applicants will be informed of the status of their application by Nov 15, 2022. The Provincial Coordinator and chosen applicant will work together to submit by the Nov 18, 2022 deadline.

Fund Management: Defeating Confusion and Simplifying Church Books

Over the decades, many of our churches have received generous and faithful gifts for a variety of needs. Often these financial gifts are designated to a specific activity or undertaking - meaning the parish or cathedral created a fund to identify and restrict the use of these gifts. Some churches end up with hundreds of funds that the faithful have committed to the Church’s care and expect to be spent according to their direction.
Church treasurers, finance committees, and vestry members often take on governance roles with little or no experience managing donor designated funds and can find the management of these gifts challenging, if not unmanageable. Questions range from:
- How do you account for all the funds created throughout a church’s long history?
- Should we implement a gift acceptance policy?
- What does a church do with small balances funds?
- Are there tools available to provide visibility into funds?
Join our panel of experts from Chazin & Company to learn about fund accounting for churches and hear tips on how to clean up your designated and restricted funds and implement processes to ensure they don’t get out of hand again. Networking Conversations
Province V's work in the world is to "Connect. Network. Support." Networks exist for people to gather around areas of interest and share resources with each other. Sometimes, networks host webinars to share information and sometimes they develop new resources to support leaders in their local contexts.
There are a number of networks meeting regularly and several that are just getting organized. Most network meetings last about 60 minutes. See their webpages or email their contact for more information.

Our guest speaker
Ida Butler is the Executive Director of Magdalene House Chicago, Inc. (MHC), a home and enterprise for positive, personal change for women survivors of sex trafficking, prostitution, and addiction in the Chicagoland area. For women survivors, MHC promises the flexibility, advocacy, and humanity they need to heal and become leaders through its residential housing and justice social enterprise programs. Ida has over 30 years of leadership and management experience that includes early childhood educator, certified assessor, and trainer; church administrator and congregational consultant; finance director and business manager for nonprofit and for profit corporations; and human resources manager for special education and special recreation cooperatives. Ida is active in the Episcopal Church community and currently serves on the Vestry of St. Philip’s in Palatine, the Commission on Ministry and the Antiracism Commission of the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago, and as President of the Chicago Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians. Ida holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Early Childhood Education from Kendall College and is also a licensed real estate broker and licensed insurance broker in Illinois. Ida has two adult children and three grandchildren. In her spare time, Ida enjoys being on the water and attending cultural arts events. She works for Jesus in many ways: as volunteer coordinator for Sustaining Earth, Our Island Home in NH, as a volunteer with several climate and social justice groups, as a student of white privilege and antiracism trying to be a good ancestor to future generations, and in her day job at Concord Hospital.

Episcopal Migration Ministries’ 2023 calendar to feature Kelly Latimore icons
Episcopal Migration Ministries is teaming up with renowned iconographer Kelly Latimore to create an inaugural monthly calendar featuring depictions of refugees, asylum seekers, and displaced persons.
The 2023 calendar includes a newly commissioned triptych for EMM—titled “Build a Longer Table”—featuring the holy family and representations of individuals served by EMM throughout its 80-plus-year ministry.

Episcopal Migration Ministry hosts an Asylum and Detention Ministry Network that meets virtually on the fourth Wednesday of every month. The Ministry Network’s collaborative work and conversation focus on best practice-sharing in areas of direct service, organizing, advocacy actions, Christian formation and worship resources, and community education to protect asylum, promote humane and dignified alternatives to detention, and to support asylum seekers and those harmed by the immigration detention system. The United Thank Offering (UTO) Board is pleased to announce the availability of its 2023 UTO Annual Grants, with a focus on the worldwide incarceration crisis. These grants are awarded for projects in The Episcopal Church and throughout the Anglican Communion, each year with a different focus.
Grant application deadlines:
- 5 p.m. ET Jan. 6, for Anglican Communion partners
- 5 p.m. ET March 10, for dioceses of The Episcopal Church.
