Provincial Court of Alberta changes name to Alberta Court of Justice

As of April 1, 2023, Alberta’s Provincial Court is now known as the Alberta Court of Justice.

The Alberta Court of Justice is the first point of contact for individuals interacting with the justice system in Alberta. The name change more accurately reflects the Court’s independence and responsibilities.

The title of the Judges of the Court has also been changed from Judge to Justice. The Court’s name and judicial title change has also resulted in a number of amendments to court forms and other materials. All materials to be filed in the Court should now reflect these legislative changes.

There will be a grace period during which time documents that use the outdated name and terminology will be considered to be valid, and previous versions of court forms will be accepted.

Community Justice Centre Engagement: April 24 & 25

The Canadian Bar Association (CBA) Alberta is hosting discussions around Community Justice Centres (CJC) and the possibility of their use within Alberta.

CJCs are spaces (physical and virtual) where justice processes are collocated with necessary services such as health, social supports, legal advice and system navigation. Alberta Justice has been conducting community engagement around CJCs over the last year and is eager to hear input from members of the CBA.
