Treating Psoriasis with Chinese Herbs and Foods

According to Chinese medicine psoriasis is a complex disorder to treat as there may be various pathogenic factors and imbalances that occur at the same time. Chinese herbal formulas match that complexity by utilizing 10-15 herbs harmoniously combined to treat both the cause and symptoms correctly which is vital when treating such a stubborn and complicated condition. Herbal formulas focus on clearing heat and detoxifying along with invigorating blood circulation and nourishing blood. Scientifically this suppresses the proliferation of the psoriatic cells, reduces tissue inflammation and resolves rash and itching.

Treatment is always more successful with changing diet as well. Alcohol, spicy foods, seafood, citrus fruits, fried foods, processed foods and saturated fats and anything that may cause allergies should be avoided. Fish oil, flax seed oil and primrose oil can also reduce inflammation.  Diet should consist of abundant amounts of fresh vegetables, fruits, non glutinous whole grains, and dietary fiber.

For an effective topical remedy try this. Take 15 peeled and sliced water chestnuts and a bottle of rice vinegar and slowly simmer in a non metal pot for 20 minutes until water chestnuts absorb most of the vinegar. Then mash into a paste and seal into a jar. Spread on a gauze pad and apply to the affected area and leave on up to 24 hours. Mild cases should show improvement within 5 days, but serious conditions could take up to two weeks.

Dana Price will be offering Buddhist based meditation classes on Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. - 7:15 p.m. staring September 17th.  The class will start with a brief introduction followed by a meditation practice.

After meditation Dana will guide participants through a  Feeding Your Demons session. Feeding Your Demons is a gentle and profound technique developed by Lama Tsultrim Allione used to clear blockages in our lives which are holding us back.

Dana became a certified facilitator over the summer and is on the path to becoming an Authorized Teacher for Lama Tsultrim. The recommended donation is $5 and is used to cover expenses. No one will be turned away for lack of funds and all are welcome. You do not need to be a Buddhist to attend. All can benefit from learning ways to calm the mind.
Psoriatic Arthritis and Acupuncture
According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, "an estimated 3 million Americans use acupuncture for chronic pain and conditions like psoriatic arthritis." The acupuncture treatments can also provide help in reducing patients' stress and muscle tension. For some of my patients with psoriatic arthritis, acupuncture has been helpful in decreasing pain as well as the side effects from their medications.

During the acupuncture treatment, only sterile needles are used. We have many acupuncture points to choose from and this enable us to needle points away the "hot" spot areas. When we do need to needle the sensitive area, patients find it worth the momentary discomfort.
Along with acupuncture treatment, dietary recommendations are also provided.

In a Traditional Chinese medicine, food is also considered medicine and plays a key role in the treatment of this autoimmune problem. One of the strengths of Traditional Chinese Medicine, is the view that each patient is unique and treatment is determined by his or her unique clinical presentation.
Psoriasis and Massage
Therapeutic massage can be great for reducing inflammation and stress, two benefits for those suffering from psoriasis. Massage is also helpful in reducing joint pain, which some people with psoriasis can experience. It is best to let your Massage Therapists know of any skin conditions up front so they can modify the therapy session to suit your needs.

Swedish massage and Reiki are two modalities that are best suited for those with psoriasis. Swedish massage uses long strokes and gentle, kneading techniques which increase circulation and stimulate the lymph system, a part of the immune system. Reiki is an ancient Japanese energy healing technique. The therapist's hands are placed gently on or slightly above different energy centers in the body to remove energy blockages and promote healing. Receiving Reiki is a very relaxing experience, and most people will feel a warm sensation and a feeling of deep relaxation and peace. Both techniques relieve physical and emotional stress which can cause psoriasis flare ups if not addressed.

Audrey has training in both modalities and has experience treating clients with psoriasis, so know that you will be in good hands when booking an appointment for massage therapy. Adding in regular massage to your healthcare plan can help to manage stress and keep flare ups at bay.
