Issue 28 | September 1, 2021
Dear Faculty, Trainees, and Staff:

As we enter the fall of 2021, we are also entering what appears to be the third surge of the COVID pandemic around the world. This comes at the same time when students are returning to the classroom, and our Campus is making every effort to open up and have a real physical presence for our educational, clinical, and research programs. Our success is dependent on team collaborations and intentional effort to expand knowledge, access to care, and contributions to science. Now, more than ever, we cannot become lax or disheartened; but rather, we must remain vigilant in maintaining safe spaces while continuing our work together. I want to applaud everyone for being creative in moving forward while we maintain and even accelerate our momentum! This letter showcases many of our successes despite these tough times.

With our energy focused in forward motion, I want to remind everyone of our State of the Department presentation on October 7th, where I will also take an opportunity to focus on where we are headed in FY22. I look forward to seeing everyone at our online forum.

Additionally, I would like to recognize the following themes and awareness dates related to our work:
  • National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month
  • National Suicide Prevention Week: Sept 7-12
  • Telehealth Awareness Week™: Sept. 19-25 - which highlights the central role and importance of telehealth within healthcare.

Finally, future issues of Psychiatry Central will feature faculty with important messages/announcements through this letter to share with everyone.

Sincerely,
Jill A. RachBeisel, MD

AWARDS
Constance Lacap, DO, was awarded 2021 University of Maryland, Baltimore Founders Week Educator of the Year as part of the Renaissance Curriculum Team. The Educator of the Year is awarded to individuals who advance the School of Medicine's academic mission, and the Renaissance Curriculum team worked through a monumental task in the midst of a pandemic.

Congratulations, Dr. Lacap!
GRANTS
The Federal Communications Commission recently awarded Gloria Reeves, MD, as PI for a $977,066 grant with Dr. Khanna of Family Medicine as Co-PI.

The grant will support health care providers and their provision of telehealth services to patients during the pandemic. The team will purchase laptops, internet services, mobile telehealth carts, equipment for vaccine research, and vaccine hotline and remote patient monitoring equipment.

Psychiatry Information Services (IS) will deploy the laptops, as well as build and deploy the telemedicine carts across the Department. In addition, Psychiatry IS will help implement the remote patient monitoring portal with the health care providers.
PUBLICATIONS
The Journal of the American Medical Association recently published "Mobile Telemedicine for Buprenorophine Treatment in Rural Populations with Opioid Use Disorder," by Eric Weintraub, MD, Chaminidi Seneviratne, MD, Jessica Anane, MPH, Kelly Coble, LCSW-C, Jessica Magidson, PhD, Sarah Kattakuzhy, MD, Aaron Greenblatt, MD, Christopher Welsh, MD, Alexandar Pappas, MD, Terri L. Ross, LCSW-C, and Annabelle Belcher, PhD.

The quality improvement study explores the treatment of opioid use disorder among patients via telemedicine and in a mobile treatment unit. Findings suggest that the combination of telemedicine and mobile services increases access to treatment for those in rural areas, and is an effective model for use during a post-pandemic climate.

The article is a collaboration with our Division of Addiction Research and Treatment; as well as with the Department of Psychology at University of Maryland, College Park; Division of Critical Care and Research, Institute of Human Virology, Division of Infectious Disease, UMSOM, Baltimore; and Caroline County Health Department, Denton, Maryland.
