Issue 34 | March 8, 2022
Dear Faculty, Trainees, and Staff:

As the pandemic winds down, the weather warms, and we have more light, things are opening up and we are getting back to normal. Cross your fingers it sticks! Education, research, and clinical operations should be back to regular operations, although we are still wearing masks in all clinical areas. Elsewhere they are optional. We have been given permission to meet in larger groups and have meals together. Reporting to work is also getting back to pre-pandemic states

Over the past two years, we have become accustomed to working remotely, having meetings via Zoom, and remaining isolated. This has not come without a cost and has particularly affected the sense of connectedness and work as a team when planning and problem solving. The silver lining is that we have had robust attendance at Grand Rounds, faculty and staff meetings, and various Departmental committees. We will selectively decide which meetings to continue in a remote format to facilitate access and participation. Smaller meetings will return to in-person.

Finally, I want to recognize that the month of March is Women’s History Month, Social Work Month, and Problem Gambling Awareness month. All of these individuals are integral to our Department, and I would like to thank all women, social workers, and our very own Center of Excellence on Problem Gambling for the work that you do every day.

Sincerely,

Jill A. RachBeisel, MD
Dr. Irving J. Taylor Professor and Chair, Department of Psychiatry

The Department of Psychiatry Diversity Committee

Please remember to visit our Hub!

The Diversity Committee has been hard at work on Implementation -- the stage of organizational change where we use our awareness, knowledge, and interest to put plans of action into place to support change through DEI initiatives. It is important as we move into the final quarter of this academic year that everyone stop and take stock of where we are in our change initiative.

Please see the graphic below from our July 2021 annual update as a reminder. If you have thoughts and input regarding our change initiatives, we would love to hear from you.
The next Diversity Committee meeting will be held on the 5th Thursday of the month on March 31 at 4pm. Click here to join.

We encourage everyone to contact Dr. Forrester at aforrest@som.umaryland.edu to share success stories regarding their DEI efforts or personal stories about individual engagement.
