Cognitive Research: Principles and Implications (CR:PI) has received its first Impact Factor. CR:PI has an overall 2-Year IF of 3.701, and a 5-Year IF of 4.079. Although a Journal Impact Factor is only one (imperfect) way of measuring a journal's success, it is an indication that the journal is doing well.
CR:PI is the Open Access journal of the Psychonomic Society. Its mission is to publish use-inspired basic research: fundamental cognitive research that grows from hypotheses about real-world problems. As with all Psychonomic Society journals, submissions to CR:PI are subject to rigorous peer review.
The Society would also like to acknowledge that all PS journals saw increases in their Impact Factors from 2019 to 2020. Kudos to all of our Editors-in-Chief and Editorial Teams for a job well done.

The Psychonomic Society congratulates Creem-Regehr on her appointment and welcomes her to her new position. The Society also thanks Jeremy M. Wolfe (Harvard Medical School/Brigham and Women's Hospital, USA), the first and current Editor-in-Chief of CR:PI, for his leadership in shaping the journal during its inaugural years and leading CR:PI to its recent achievement of receiving its first Impact Factor.

Hippocampal neurons prepare for heading south for the winter or north for the summer. Long-distance migratory birds, like the spotted sandpiper (Actitis macularius), provide the opportunity to learn about neuronal plasticity required for travel. In a comparison of parvalbumin neurons in the hippocampal formation of spotted sandpipers that were in a rest period vs. premigration period, there were significantly more neurons in premigration individuals. The authors proposed that this increase reflects the changes needed to make the long journeys. Read the article.

We tend to be good at knowing when we can perform specific actions and when we can't. These "action boundaries" are updated on the fly in healthy adults. In people with Parkinson's disease, however, this ability may be impacted, as the disease impairs certain motor actions.
|
|
Healthy controls and participants with mild-to-moderate Parkinson's disease gave estimates of their ability to perform reaching, grasping, and aperture passing, and then carried out the movements. The accuracy of both groups was similar, leading the authors to suggest that the ability to estimate movement is intact in mild-to-moderate Parkinson's disease. Read the article.

A standardized tool for investigating Christian religious beliefs is now available for use. The Cambridge Psycholinguistic Inventory of Christian Beliefs has 400 audio-recorded statements related to religious beliefs, moral beliefs, scientific knowledge, and everyday life knowledge. Results from two studies show that the tool has good construct validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability. Read the article.

In response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, many governments around the world around the world required or strongly recommended the wearing of face coverings (masks) in public spaces. Many of these restrictions remain in place today. While the wearing of face coverings to prevent the spread of disease is fairly common in some Asian countries, it seems likely that their use elsewhere will continue, even after the immediate risk of COVID-19 subsides. Request for Proposals
Initial Proposal Deadline: Sept 1, 2021
|
|
|
The William K. and Katherine W. Estes Fund invites proposals to fund advanced training opportunities in mathematical and computational modeling for psychological science in summer schools or focused workshops. Proposed training opportunities may take place virtually or in person. The committee believes that in-person trainings have benefits not available in a virtual setting but will consider funding for a virtual event when a proposal makes a sufficiently strong case for one. Proposals with budgets not exceeding $20,000 are encouraged. Initial Proposals are due Sept 1, 2021. Full proposals are by invitation only and will be due Dec 1, 2021. Review the Application Process for proposal requirements and to submit your initial proposal.
The William K. and Katherine W. Estes Fund is a joint initiative of the Psychonomic Society and Association for Psychological Science.

Virtual meeting attendees and on-site meeting participants are eligible to apply, as long as they are Society members in good standing or undergraduate students. This year, the Society is offering a combination of $100 USD grants (no receipts required) for virtual meeting participants and grants of up to $500 USD (receipts required) for on-site meeting participants.
