PS One World Seminar Series Presents

Integrated representations in perception and memory illuminated by neural and behavioral dynamics

Speaker: Gregory Cox

Abstract

Much of cognition depends on the ability to form representations that integrate information, whether from our external environment, via perception, or our internal environment, via memory. In this talk, I describe empirical results and computational modeling that shed light on the mechanisms by which these kinds of integrated representations are formed. I focus on visual search on the one hand and associative memory on the other. A unifying theme is the importance of dynamics, whether neural or behavioral, for revealing the structure of integrated representations and the types of processes involved in their formation. More.

All talks in the One World Seminar Series are underwritten by the Psychonomic Society and made available free of charge. The Society is committed to programmatic accessibility and has secured ASL interpretation and closed captioning for all One World events in the 2023-2024 academic year.

In Memory of Rob Sanford

Our scientific community has lost a towering figure and a guiding light with the passing of Rob Sanford, our esteemed Submissions Editor of over four decades. Rob was the steward of our journals. His integrity in maintaining the highest standards of academic excellence was unparalleled. His legacy is not just in the volumes of work that bear his meticulous touch, but in the countless researchers and authors whom he mentored, inspired, and guided through the complex landscape of scientific publishing.

As we mourn the loss of such an influential figure, we also celebrate the indelible mark he has left on our field. Rob's visionary role not only advanced the frontiers of our fields but also fostered a sense of unity and purpose among our members. His passion for our science and commitment to quality will continue to resonate within our institutions and in the pages of our journals.

Our thoughts are with his family, to whom we extend our deepest sympathies, as we join them in remembering a remarkable individual whose life's work has enriched us all.

PB&R joins Peer Community in Registered Reports (PCI RR)

Psychonomic Bulletin & Review is pleased to join the Peer Community in Registered Reports as a PCI RR-interested journal. PCI RR is a non-profit, non-commercial community dedicated to receiving, reviewing, and recommending Registered Reports. Stage 1 manuscripts that are peer reviewed and recommended by PCI RR, and address a topic of substantial theoretical significance in cognitive psychology, will be invited for submission to PB&R. PB&R is excited to benefit from the expertise of PCI RR reviewers and contribute to the community; we will aim to invite Stage 1 manuscripts that can be in-principle accepted without additional review so authors can move directly to carrying out their study and preparing their Stage 2 manuscript.

Audiovisual integration of rhythm in musicians and dancers

By Tram Nguyen, Rebekka Lagacé-Cusiac, J. Celina Everling, Molly J. Henry & Jessica A. Grahn

In two experiments, musicians, dancers, and controls completed audiovisual integration and synchronization using dynamic visual stimuli tasks. While groups performed similarly in audiovisual integration, auditory distractors when synchronizing visually impacted musicians more, whereas visual distractors when synchronizing to auditory cues impacted dancers more. Challenges in replication: Does amygdala gray matter volume relate to social network size?

By Rankin W. McGugin, Alexandra Roche, Jonathan Ma & Isabel Gauthier

McGugin et al. replicated research on the link between social network size and amygdala volume. The findings were inconclusive regarding a correlation between real-world social network sizes and the amygdala, and no correlation between online social network measures and the amygdala.
