The courses she teaches at Brandeis include Learning & Memory, Social Neuroscience and Culture, and Cognitive Neuroscience of Aging. When not working, she enjoys traveling, going to Soul Cycle, and chilling at home with the family (ideally with their cat nearby).

PS One World Seminar Series presents

Embodied Cognition for Kids: Applying Principles of Embodiment to Education

Speaker: Arthur Glenberg

Arizona State University, USA

January 25, 2023 | 11:15 AM - 1 PM ET | Register Now

Seminar Description

A principle of embodiment is that cognition is a simulation process that taps neural and bodily systems of action, perception, and emotion. This principle has been demonstrated in multiple, basic research projects using both behavioral paradigms and neurophysiological measurements. I will briefly review some of this research and then describe how the research can (and has) been used to design effective educational interventions in three domains: reading, mathematics, and physics.

All talks in the One World Seminar Series are underwritten by the Psychonomic Society and made available free of charge.

PS Announces 2023 Collaborative Symposium

In conjunction with the European Society for Cognitive Psychology (ESCoP)

The Psychonomic Society is pleased to announce the second Collaborative Symposium for 2023: "The Power of Language Use on Judgment and Decision-Making," organized by Zeynep Aslan, University of Chicago, USA, Boaz Keysar, University of Chicago, USA, and Janet Geipel, University of Exeter, UK. The symposium will be held in conjunction with the 23rd Conference of the European Society for Cognitive Psychology (ESCoP) 6-9 September, 2023 in Porto, Portugal.

Description

Language is embedded in almost every aspect of our lives. People use language not only to communicate with others but also to think about the world and make decisions. Despite such heavy involvement of language in our daily experiences, understanding the nature of the relationship between language and thought has been a longstanding challenge for cognitive science. An extensive literature describes how speakers of different languages perceive and think about the world differently, demonstrating how different linguistic structures can shape the thought processes of individuals. However, relatively recently, research has shown that other seemingly insignificant elements of language, such as language status (i.e., native or foreign) and language modality (i.e., spoken or written) can influence how people think, judge, and decide. This symposium will present cutting-edge research on how and why such aspects of language systematically influence processes that govern judgment and decision-making.

The first 2023 Collaborative Symposium

The first 2023 Collaborative Symposium, organized by Seema Prasad, Technical University Dresden, Germany, and Ramesh Kumar Mishra, University of Hyderabad, India, was held in conjunction with the Experimental Psychology Society (EPS) meeting in London, UK, in early January.

The effect of memory load on object reconstruction: Insights from an online mouse-tracking task

By Aedan Y. Li, James Y. Yuan, Carson Pun & Morgan D. Barense

Li and colleagues investigated how memory load impacts object reconstruction in a new online mouse-tracking task. One finding was that participants moved their mouse cursors three times more over studied nontarget objects when memory load was highest. Read this paper.

The effect of age on delay performance and associative learning tasks in pigeons

By Mary Flaim & Aaron P. Blaisdell

Young and old pigeons took a memory task, a delayed match-to-sample task, and an associative learning task. Performance was comparable on all tasks, except for the associated learning task, where the old pigeons performed worse. Read this paper.

Communicating risk: How relevant and irrelevant probabilistic information influences risk perception in medical decision-making

By Sayuri Hayakawa & Viorica Marian

Hayakawa and Marian measured the effects of subjective processes, objective knowledge, and demographics on how people estimate risks associated with medical treatments. The findings point to helpful ways medical professionals communicate risk to their patients. Read this paper.
