Working Memory and Cognition Inside and Outside of the Focus of Attention
Nelson Cowan, University of Missouri, USA
Thursday, November 21, 6:30 PM ET
Westside Ballroom, New York Marriott Marquis
This talk illustrates how research can be guided by a conceptual model of information processing and working memory, in this case the embedded-processes model. In this model, the focus of attention is embedded within the activated portion of long-term memory.

The error-speed effect suggests that the speed of recognition errors in an initial binary task predicts accuracy in later tests. Two experiments showed that the speed of these errors predicts confidence ratings, indicating that some errors stem from misleading memory evidence. Read this paper.

Cultural differences in emotion perception offer insights into cognition and social interaction. Zhao et al. investigated how ethnicity and ensemble coding affect emotion perception. The results suggest that the other ethnicity effect is due to differential emotional amplification in ensemble coding. Read this paper.

The levels-of-processing (LOP) framework holds that deeper processing improves memory over short intervals. The authors measured how LOP affects forgetting over longer intervals. There was no difference in forgetting rates between processing types, which indicates that forgetting rates are independent of the initial processing depth. Read this paper.
