The neuroscience of social comparison and competition

By Avishalom Tor & Stephen M. Garcia

People rely on social comparisons to reduce uncertainty surrounding competitive situations. However, the extent to which individuals engage in social comparisons and the behavioral outcomes often fall short of the potential benefits derived from improved self-evaluation. There remain several unresolved questions that warrant further exploration. Read this paper.

Perceived image size modulates visual memory

by Su Keun Jeong

Using the Ebbinghaus illusion to manipulate the perceived size of visual stimuli, participants were tasked with remembering these stimuli. Individuals had better memory for images that appeared larger perceptually, even though their physical sizes remained the same as the smaller images. These findings provide support for the notion that visual memory is influenced by top-down feedback. Read this paper.

A timely glimpse of memories to come

By Catalin V. Buhusi & Mona Buhusi

Engrams represent the physical embodiment of memory traces. What's underlying the creation, storage, retrieval, and modification of memory engrams? Recent technological advancements open promising avenues to address conditions characterized by impaired or excessive memory linking. Read this paper.
