Two New Papers on the Recent History

of the Psychonomic Society

History is never dry and boring – and the recent history of the Psychonomic Society is no exception. Indeed, we are lucky to have a Society and a history to look back on: we have published two new papers that tell the story of how the Society was turned around from a deficit-prone self-publisher to a modern and thriving Society that is reaping the rewards of the scientific reputation we have built over so many decades. The papers take us behind the scenes of a gargantuan effort by a dedicated team of true leaders—and many additional unsung heroes—without whom our Society would not be poised for a bright future.

1997-2014

In 2023, the Governing Board engaged the expertise of historians from The Archives of the History of American Psychology at the University of Akron to update our historical narrative spanning from 1997 and 2014. Authored by Jennifer L. Bazar and Kelli Vaughn-Johnson, the article entitled “A Time of Significant Challenges and Change: The Psychonomic Society, 1997-2014" provides an insightful exploration of this pivotal period in our organization’s evolution.

Shifting from Self-Publishing to Springer

A trio of prominent Psychonomes, D. Stephen Lindsay, R. Reed Hunt, and Brian Ross, wrote a paper about their experience in closing down the Society’s publishing arm and transitioning to a major publisher.

Previous Papers (1960-1996)

Four articles, written by Donald A. Dewsbury and Robert C. Bolles, describing the Society’s history from its founding to 1996 appeared in Psychonomic Bulletin & Review

PS One World Seminar Series Presents

Danny Oppenheimer on March 27

Cognitive Science in the age of Augmented Cognition

Speaker: Danny Oppenheimer

Carnegie Mellon University, USA

March 27, 2024

11:15 AM - 1 PM U.S. Eastern Time | Register Now

Abstract

While most psychologists focus on thinking that occurs in the brain, most would also acknowledge that cognition is not exclusively accomplished by the brain, but by an interaction between brains, tools, and environments. According to the "extended time" perspective, cognitive processes are often offloaded to various technologies, freeing our limited cognitive resources for more complex thought. More.

All talks in the One World Seminar Series are underwritten by the Psychonomic Society and made available free of charge. The Society is committed to programmatic accessibility and has secured ASL interpretation and closed captioning for all One World events in the 2023-2024 season.

Rodent tests of depression and anxiety: Construct validity and translational relevance

By Sinem Gencturk & Gunes Unal

This review outlines laboratory procedures for evaluating depressive-and anxiety-like behaviors, including stress-triggered responses (like despair) and nonaversive training-induced constructs (like cognitive bias). Specific behavioral tests assessing these constructs are described alongside critiques of their theoretical foundations. Read this paper.

Unveiling why race does not affect the mask effect on attractiveness: but gender and expression do

By Ellie Hewer & Michael B. Lewis

Research indicates that face masks can impact attractiveness, with race identified as influencing this effect's magnitude. This study examines how expressions, race, and gender moderate this effect. When controlling for the impact of unmasked attractiveness, race effects diminish, but gender and expression effects persist. Read this paper.

Language and autobiographical memory development from 5 to 12 years: A longitudinal perspective

By Llanos Merín, Alonso Mateo, Marta Nieto, Laura Ros & José Miguel Latorre

This study examines the development of language and autobiographical memory in participants aged 5 and again at age 12. The positive correlation between the two during preschool years, but not at the second measurement, suggests that preschool age is critical for developing these skills. Read this paper.
