One World Seminar Series Presents

Penny Lewis

Sleep Engineering for Health and Cognition

Penny Lewis

Cardiff University, UK

March 26, 2025

11:15 AM - 1:00 PM U.S. ET  | Register Now

Abstract

This lecture will talk about ways that we can tinker with our sleep though a new science of sleep engineering. The aim of this science are firstly to better understand sleep and why it is important, and secondly to improve health (for instance slowing the ageing process) and cognition (for instance boosting memories and reducing negative emotions). There is also evidence that sleep engineering could facilitate creative processes like extraction of gist from a corpus of information or forming novel links. In this talk I will introduce sleep and show what we can do to it with sleep engineering. I will also talk about potential future applications of sleep engineering to clinical problems.

All talks in the One World Seminar Series are underwritten by the Psychonomic Society and made available free of charge. The Psychonomic Society is committed to programmatic accessibility and has secured ASL interpretation and quality closed captioning for all One World events in the 2024-2025 schedule.

Resources for US-based Members: Federation of Associations in Behavioral and Brain Sciences

The Fundamentals of Eye Tracking

A PS Digital Event

Humans are visual animals and knowing how humans select information from the visual world is both scientifically and practically of great interest. In this Digital Event, experienced eye tracking researchers reflect on the four articles in the “fundamentals of eye tracking” series, from how to formulate research questions that can be answered with an eye tracker, to operationalizing research questions, to choosing an eye tracker, and the tools needed to conduct an eye-tracking study.

  1. The fundamentals of eye tracking
  2. Do you need an eye tracker? Let’s take a closer look
  3. Examining the assumptions underpinning eye-tracking research
  4. Expanding the perspective: Eye tracking in ophthalmology and neurology
  5. This overview of tools won’t make eye-tracking research easy
  6. Expanding the horizons of eye-tracking research: Lessons from the fundamentals series

We extend our gratitude to those who made this special event possible: Laura Mickes, Roy Hessels, Richard Andersson, Erin Buchanan, Frans Cornelissen, Denis Drieghe, Ignace Hooge, Alan Kingstone, Ellen Kok, Diederick Niehorster, Marcus Nyström, Dilce Tanriverdi

Acute psychological stress promotes implicit aggression: Evidence from behavior and ERPs

By Yu Zhang, Xiaoyu Chen, Yuncheng Jia, Yixin Duan, Meihe Liu, Qingyu Xu, Lingrong Jia & Lili Wu

Acute stress influences explicit aggression through “fight or flight” or “tend and befriend.” Its impact on implicit aggression is less known. This study tested 55 participants, exposing some to stress and measuring neural activity during an aggression-related task. The findings support the idea that people instinctively fight or flee under pressure.. Read this paper.

Learning the layout of different environments: Common or dissociated abilities?

By Alexis Topete, Chuanxiuyue He & Mary Hegarty

People navigate different environments using various cues. This study tested whether learning these layouts relies on the same mental skills. Participants explored a virtual maze and campus and completed tasks measuring their spatial knowledge. There was a shared ability for learning layouts in both environments, though they also had unique aspects. Read this paper.
