Nearly 1,200 Attendees in the Audience for Cowan's Keynote Address

Cowan's talk illustrated how research can be guided by a conceptual model of information processing and working memory, in this case the embedded-processes model. In this model, the focus of attention is embedded within the activated portion of long-term memory. Both contribute to working memory, the limited amount of information temporarily held in mind and used to carry out various mental activities. Working memory is involved, for example, in comprehension, reading, math, and problem-solving. There are some fundamental questions about it. More.

Symposium on Cognition, Behavior, and Society: Climate Change and Human Cognition

Climate change has become one of the chief existential issues of the day, with the potential to alter and threaten life on the planet. It’s become increasingly clear over recent decades that human choices and behaviors are a primary driver of climate change. This symposium will address the role of human cognition has played in the changes to our climate that have already occurred as well future changes that result from the perceptions and decisions that people make about responding to adverse climate events. "Optimism and resilience

for the Psychonomic future"

by Stephan Lewandowsky

Viktor Frankl coined the term “tragic optimism” to describe the human ability to move forward with a positive attitude even when encountering hardship or challenges. Tragic optimism underpins personal resilience; for example, it has been identified as a predictor of well-being and resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic.

I believe that the Psychonomic Society can look towards the future with considerable optimism, notwithstanding some clear challenges and hardships that lie ahead for science and scientists. Read on.

One World Seminar Series Presents

Morgan Barense on January 22

Enhancing Real-World Event Memory

Speaker: Morgan Barense

University of Toronto, Canada

January 22, 2025

11:15 AM - 1 PM U.S. ET | Register Now

Abstract

Memory is essential for shaping how we interpret the world, plan for the future, and understand ourselves, yet effective cognitive interventions for real-world episodic memory loss remain scarce. This talk introduces HippoCamera, a smartphone-based intervention inspired by how the brain supports memory, designed to enhance real-world episodic recollection by replaying high-fidelity autobiographical cues. It will showcase how our approach improves memory, mood, and hippocampal activity while uncovering links between memory distinctiveness, well-being, and the perception of time. More.

All talks in the One World Seminar Series are underwritten by the Psychonomic Society and made available free of charge. The Psychonomic Society is committed to programmatic accessibility and has secured ASL interpretation and quality closed captioning for all One World events in the 2024-2025 schedule.

AP&P Steps Up Efforts to Increase Replicability by Launching Open Science Initiative Changes

AP&P brought on William Ngiam, University of Chicago, as its Open Practices Editor. William will ensure that all the open science materials (preregistration, code, data, etc.) are adequately described, are accessible, and can be used to replicate the study. Additionally, the open science statement will now be prominently featured in the abstract. Read more in the AP&P Editorial here.

Abstracts in Languages other than English

The Psychonomic Society welcomes and encourages authors to submit manuscript abstracts in languages other than English. Authors should place the additional abstract immediately below the English-language abstract in the manuscript.

If the manuscript is accepted, the additional abstract will be published alongside the English abstract. Please note that we cannot do any copyediting to the additional abstract.

Monkeys overestimate connected arrays in a relative quantity task: A reverse connectedness illusion

By Michael J. Beran, Maisy D. Englund, Elizabeth L. Haseltine, Christian Agrillo & Audrey E. Parrish

The "connectedness illusion" occurs when people see groups of objects linked together and tend to think there are fewer items than there are compared to unlinked objects. Does the same occur with monkeys? Unlike humans, the monkeys seemed to think groups with connected objects actually had more items, not fewer. Different facets of age perception in people with developmental prosopagnosia and "super-recognizers"

By Janice Attard-Johnson, Olivia Dark, Ebony Murray & Sarah Bate

In three studies, researchers compared super-recognizers, people with developmental prosopagnosia, and neurotypical controls on age perception tasks. All groups performed similarly when estimating the exact ages. However, super-recognizers better classified faces as over or under 18 years old. Read this paper.
