Critical Approaches to Human Cognition
Speaker: Richard Prather
University of Maryland, USA
October 23, 2024
11:15 AM - 1 PM U.S. ET | Register Now
Abstract
In this talk I outline a Critical Approach to studying human cognition. This approach to cognition draws on methods and approaches across the social and behavioral sciences. The goal of this approach is to allow for a course correction for the study of human cognition away from a past that often explicitly or implicitly supported human hierarchy (e.g., white supremacy, misogyny). While explicit references to hierarchy have receded somewhat from mainstream work, some influence remains, particularly in the form of homogenous samples and assumptions about who is "normal." I address how we can deal with some of these issues while advancing our understanding of human cognition. More.
All talks in the One World Seminar Series are underwritten by the Psychonomic Society and made available free of charge. The Psychonomic Society is committed to programmatic accessibility and has secured ASL interpretation and quality closed captioning for all One World events in the 2024-2025 schedule.

Wolfe selected as PS-Sponsored Keynote Speaker for NITOP 2025 | |
|
Abstract
As topics to teach, vision and attention have the advantage of offering many excellent demonstrations. Indeed, I promise to show a few that you have not seen. My purpose is to show that these are more than intellectually stimulating fun and games. Missing things that are “right in front of your eyes” and seeing things that are not actually present are phenomena with important real-world consequences. We miss visible stimuli all the time. These can be trivial. More.

Can brain activity during emotion regulation predict individual differences in working memory ability? Overlapping cognitive processes and neural mechanisms between the two suggest so. Read this paper.

Using parameters from a diffusion model based on responses from participants as they made source decisions for items that they recognized can help better understand the temporal aspects of item and source processing. The findings have implications for the roles of recollection and familiarity. Read this paper.

Is it necessary to explicitly process emotional stimuli to impair working memory, or is their mere presence enough to capture attention? In two experiments, memory performance was lower when participants viewed negative images than neutral ones. Emotional images captured attention regardless of whether they were consciously processed, reducing memory performance. Read this paper.
