2025 Keynote Address

The Cognition of Social Remembering: Implications for Individual and Collective Memory

Suparna Rajaram, Stony Brook University

Thursday, November 20, 7:30 PM - 8:30 PM MST
Plaza Ballroom ABC, Plaza Building, Concourse Level

As social animals, humans have a deep need to connect with others, facilitated by sharing and transmitting information among social connections. We learn and remember with others, and we construct collective memory for the past. Yet, over a century of scientific experimental research has focused on the study of memory in individuals working alone. Cognitive research on memory in recent years has begun to focus on how sociality influences memory, and my research group leverages cognitive principles of individual memory to investigate these social influences. Refugees welcome? Empathy attenuates effects of xenophobia on neuronal responses to in-group and out-group suffering

By Thomas Plieger, Annabel Vetterlein, Thomas Grünhage, Svea A. Hogeterp, Lilli Wagner, Merlin Monzel, Peter Trautner, Andrea Felten, Jana Karneboge, Tobias Bauer, Theodor Rüber & Martin Reute

In this investigation on how people respond to images of suffering in-group members versus out-group (refugees), both types of images activated empathy-related brain areas, but in-group suffering elicited stronger inferior frontal gyrus activity. Individuals high in empathy showed reduced in-group bias, suggesting that empathy can counteract negative biases. Read this paper.
