Updates on the 2021 Annual Meeting

The 2021 Annual Meeting is currently scheduled for November 18-21, 2021 (dates subject to change). The conference is being planned as a hybrid event, with live and virtual components. The location of the meeting is still being finalized and will be announced around the end of May.
Please note that the meeting may become fully virtual if guidance from the CDC, WHO, and/or local health authorities prevents us from meeting in person. Regardless of the meeting format (hybrid or virtual), all presenters will have the option to present remotely if they so choose.

Last year, with the help of the PS Review Committee, a record number of applications for the Psychonomic Society Graduate Conference Awards and J. Frank Yates Student Conference Awards (previously travel awards) were reviewed much faster than in previous years.
This year, the review period will take place in July (dates subject to change). If you are an Emeritus Member, Fellow, or Member of the Society and would like to volunteer on the PS Review Committee, please complete and submit this online form by June 1. Volunteers will be asked to review approximately 5-10 abstract submissions.
Thank you for helping us ensure that all applicants for our Graduate Conference Awards receive a thorough and fair review!

The Call for Nominations for the 2022 PS Governing Board will be open from May 1 - June 15, 2021. The Society will be filling two seats on the 2022 Governing Board, with board terms lasting six years (2022-2027). Each member (Emeritus Fellow, Emeritus Member, Fellow, or Member) may nominate up to four persons. Student members may not vote.
The names of the three persons who receive the greatest number of nominations, and who signify their willingness to serve, shall be placed on an election ballot. The Nominations Committee will select an additional three candidates (who may also be persons nominated by the membership) to be placed on the ballot. Thus, the final ballot to be submitted for vote by the membership will include six nominees. Elections for the 2022 Governing Board will run from July 15 - August 31, 2021. Memory & Cognition is seeking submissions for a special issue or section featuring studies that present data from underrepresented populations. We are looking for empirical studies in human cognition in which the participants are drawn from populations that are underrepresented in the cognitive psychology literature. One of the primary goals of this Special Issue is to highlight cross-cultural cognitive research and to interrogate the ideas of human cognitive universals and human cognitive diversity. Are rats empathetic?
In this paper, rats had to make a choice. They could:
- Release a restrained rat to hang out with,
- Hang out with an unrestrained rat, or
- Do no socializing.
The rats opted for socializing but did so more with the unrestrained rat. What do these findings tell us about our empathetic behaviors? Read the article.

Are you a camouflage-breaker? That is, can you detect a hard-to-find target quickly and accurately?
In a recent paper, experts, who were trained in a camouflage-breaking task, performed as quickly and accurately on the task as non-experts can detect pop-out targets in visual search tasks. An impressive skill that surely can come in handy under various circumstances. Read the article.

Virtual labs enable mass data collection and observation of social phenomena. They let us study people where social life increasingly happens: online. You can now design an experiment to generate a live social network, get responses from thousands of individuals, and track real-time data from live interactions with Empirica. Empirica is a fully customizable virtual lab kit (even for novice web developers) that lets you rapidly prototype experiments, collect data, and iterate your designs. Read the article.
