A Message from the Governing Board Chair
Greetings, colleagues! This has been a busy month. We are pleased to update you on our efforts to apply the behavior science expertise of our members to the creation of resources for the public about how best to limit the spread of COVID-19. We are asking everyone who receives this newsletter to help distribute our new flier on best practices for social distancing. Our first flier, on face touching, has been covered in newspapers and television networks within the US and beyond, and it has been translated into over 20 languages. Please help spread the word by distributing both fliers as widely as possible, including to colleagues and others in places where these languages are spoken. Please check out our other volunteering opportunities as well. Our Carbon Neutral Task Force continues planning to reduce our carbon footprint and to strategize for adapting our November annual meeting – which, barring a great calamity, is definitely on! – to a substantially or fully virtual format. You’ll also see updates about approaching deadlines, as well as about Governing Board elections, forthcoming special issues of our journals, and new posts and podcasts from our digital content team. We hope everyone is safe and adapting as well as possible to our new way of living, and we look forward to seeing you, either in person or virtually, at our annual meeting in November.
Best,
Jim Pomerantz
Chair, Governing Board

How to Stop Touching Your Face
(Now available in 20+ languages)

Human behavior plays a large role in the spread of
coronavirus. Research has shown that we touch our faces far more often than we may realize and this creates a major path for the spread of the disease.
Behavioral scientists have made recommendations based on empirical evidence on how to reduce the number of times you touch your face. We have turned these recommendations into an infographic that is now available in multiple languages. We hope you will
download and share the infographic.

"In this paper, the researchers investigated the relationship between the word-composite effect and speedy responses to the orthographic lexicon by fluent readers. They found that "...holistic processing of visual words is associated with efficient access to the orthographic lexicon among adult fluent readers.”

"Attention capture may play a role in the animacy effect (i.e., animate objects are remembered better than inanimate objects). Or, more specifically, 'The results of the current studies suggest that the survival-related characteristics of animacy and threat might be capturing attention of participants, and this increased attention could be one factor leading to increased memories for those items.'”
