Hope is

Not A Plan

The video, "Hope is Not A Plan" is now available on the website, in our blog and at This film should be required viewing for everyone, whether you have a disability or not. Why, you ask? Simple. Most of us will, at some time in our lives, become disabled in some way. The fact is that those of us with disabilities have no civil rights when compared to those of us who are not disabled. This should resonate with every Canadian. No disability? Your time may come. Do you want your rights? Watch the video.

An election is almost on us, and we need to discuss civil rights for people with disabilities with politicians. People with disabilities do not have a way to enforce civil rights in British Columbia, or indeed anywhere in Canada. This must change!

View the video. Pass the link around. It's less than an hour long, and it can have a huge, and a positive, impact - if enough people see it!

Spring has Sprung!

Finally! The first day of spring is behind us and the weather, while still a bit damp, is getting better all the time. And you don't have to shovel damp! Just ask our Director at Large what a benefit that is! (Editor's note: the third day of "spring" was -23C with the wind chill here in sunny Ontario - sunny yes, spring? not so much.)

Moving along...

April Pub Night

Pub Night is April 6, 2014, coming up fast!

We're back at the Artful Dodger Neighbourhood Pub! We'll have live entertainment featuring Joanne Chaisson and Helen Wells, a silent auction and a live auction featuring auctioneer Wild Bill Henke.

Adding the usual raffles, door prizes, good food and great company, we're sure that this will be a fun night for all!

As usual, we are limiting tickets to 100 only at $25.00 per. Each ticket includes a Buffet Dinner and a beverage.

Tickets can be purchased on line at the Langley Pos-Abilities website, by phone at 604-961-0117, or from any board member.

And, as usual, the more auction items, raffle goodies and door prizes we have the better! If you or someone you know would be willing to donate an item, it will be accepted gratefully!

Annual General Meeting

As usual, the AGM will be in June, but it is never too soon to start planning. As a board, we are exploring some changes in the way things are done and how certain issues are handled. Several new ideas and recommendations will be presented to the Membership at the AGM.

We are also encouraging everyone to consider running for office. Directors of the Society need to be committed to attending meetings (once a month for three hours +/-), and to being active in the Society (volunteering at Society functions, helping to plan events, selling tickets and similar functions).
More on the AGM in the next newsletter.

Community Activities

Your Society will be out in the community on the usual days --
Langley Community Day, Canada Day and Country Celebrations in September to name a few. We'll see what else comes up.

We always need volunteers for these functions as we have to set up booths and tables and take them down at the end, and we need to explain to visitors exactly what it is we do. If you can spare a few hours on any of those days, it would be greatly appreciated.

Try On A Disability

The success of the DVD and the program itself has been recognized in many ways, not the least of which is the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Nursing program.
I will be teaching the nursing students at Kwantlen about the concept, which, hopefully, will lead to more opportunities to expose more student practitioners to the program. After all, the more these young people know about their potential clients, the better it will be for everyone.
Have a wonderful Spring!
