As we continue to celebrate our institution's 60th anniversary and move from summer into fall, I want to take a moment to connect with all of you and share some important updates within our institution and in public health.

Remembering Dr. Edwin H. Krick
It is with profound sadness that I share the news of the passing of Dr. Edwin H. Krick, who served as the Dean of our School of Public Health from 1986 to 1990. As a rheumatologist, beloved teacher, and compassionate leader, he left an indelible mark on our community and the lives of countless patients, students, and colleagues.

Inland Empire battles low college grad rates to gain higher tech jobs and businesses
For many Californians, the Inland Empire is a view from Interstate 10 of massive warehouses and desert en route to Las Vegas or other parts of the country.
To residents of the region, which comprises Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, it’s a place of affordable housing yet interminable traffic, sweeping vistas shrouded by perpetual smog, and huge employers alongside family-owned businesses.

The Salton Sea, California’s largest lake by surface area, is experiencing an increasing rate of shoreline retreat following a policy change that shifted more water from the Colorado River to San Diego, according to a newly published study.

SPH Alumni Named Dean of the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS)
The SPH wants to congratulate Dr. Kara Zografos, SPH alumni and Summer 2023 alumni spotlight, on being named the Dean of the CHHS at California State University, Fresno. Dr. Zografos inspires current and future LLUSPH students, demonstrating the power of perseverance, dedication, and a heart devoted to serving others.

The Association Between Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors and Polypharmacy in Older Adults: The Loma Linda Longevity Study
SPH Alumni Dr. Abrar Bardesi latest publication, The Association Between Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors and Polypharmacy in Older Adults: The Loma Linda Longevity Study, found that higher fat intake was directly linked to an increased need for medications, while regular physical activity, a higher fruit intake, and a healthy overall lifestyle were all associated with a lower likelihood of polypharmacy. Future research can explore the mechanisms linking these behaviors with medication usage.

The Effect of Daily Avocado Intake on Food and Nutrient Displacement in a Free-Living Population with Abdominal Obesity
SPH Alumni Dr. Abigail Clarke latest publication, The Effect of Daily Avocado Intake on Food and Nutrient Displacement in a Free-Living Population with Abdominal Obesity, concluded that incorporating 1 avocado daily led to favorable modifications in the dietary composition of participants, including an increase in potassium and fiber intake, which can improve diet quality.

Dr. Fradin-Read's path to a career in public health and integrative medicine has been anything but conventional. Originally from France, Dr. Fradin-Read was first a physician before moving to the United States and discovering her true calling in preventive care and holistic wellness.

Loma Linda University School of Public Health will have several upcoming volunteer opportunities for alumni, faculty, and staff. We are currently seeking SPH alumni, faculty, and staff, to assist in volunteering during various events like Open House, Careers in Public Health, etc. As a volunteer, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth running of the event.
Your responsibilities may include:
- Providing a warm welcome to guests
- Offering directional guidance and answering questions
- Aiding in the setup and breakdown of the event space
- Supporting our team with any other tasks that arise during the day
