First Measles Case Reported in Connecticut Since 2021

The Connecticut Department of Public Health this week announced that it has confirmed a case of measles in an unvaccinated Fairfield County child under the age of 10.  This is the first case of measles in Connecticut in more than four years.  Nationwide, more than 1,800 cases of measles have been reported in 2025 – the most since the virus was declared eliminated in the United States in 2000 and the most cases in more than three decades, according to the International Vaccine Access Center.

Tips for a Safe and Healthy Holiday Season

The holiday season brings joy and togetherness—but it also introduces extra safety and health risks. Uncas Health District encourages residents to keep celebrations safe by taking simple precautions with decorations, food, and festivities. Check holiday lights for damage before plugging them in, avoid overloading outlets, water live trees regularly to reduce fire risk, and never leave candles burning unattended (or consider battery-operated candles as a safer option).

Hosting a holiday feast? Keep food safety in focus: plan enough space to store perishables, use separate cutting boards for raw meat, cook foods to proper temperatures, and keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Refrigerate leftovers within two hours. If alcohol is part of your celebration, know your limits, offer non-alcoholic options, and make sure everyone has a safe ride home. Finally, take care of yourself by staying active, getting enough sleep, and managing stress so you can fully enjoy a safe, healthy, and happy holiday season.

December is Food Service Safety Month

Worldwide Food Service Safety Month is a reminder that safe food handling is everyone’s responsibility — from commercial kitchens to home cooks. Each year, food-borne illness affects millions of people and can be especially serious for young children, older adults, pregnant people, and those with weakened immune systems. By following four simple steps — Clean, Separate, Cook, and Chill — we can greatly reduce the risk of “food poisoning” and keep the meals we prepare safer for everyone.

For practical tips on handwashing, avoiding cross-contamination, cooking to proper temperatures, and storing leftovers safely, explore the FDA’s Safe Food Handling guide.
