Safer Homes, Healthier Kids:

Reducing Lead Risk in Winnebago County

Every child deserves a safe home, and lead hazards in older housing still put families at risk in Winnebago County. Winnebago County Public Health (WCPH) is working to identify and reduce lead hazards in homes where children are vulnerable.

Apply Now For The Lead Safe Homes Program!

This program helps coordinate and pay for the safe removal of lead hazards from homes and rental properties in Winnebago County. WCPH has helped improve over 55 homes in the past three years at little or no cost to homeowner and renters. WCPH recently secured additional grant funding and staff to allow us to expand this program, and help even more families live in lead safe homes.

What Makes You Eligible For The Program?

  • Home owners or landlords of properties built before 1978 can apply.
  • The home must have children or a pregnant woman living or regularly visiting who are on Medicaid or BadgerCare Plus.
  • The property must be insured, with taxes up to date.

This program is paid for by the Lead Hazard Reduction Grant and Lead Safe Homes Program

Wading in Winnebago: Water Testing Season Is Back!

Warm weather is here, and in Winnebago County, Wisconsin that means it's time for water recreation! Winnebago County Public Health partners with University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh's ERIC Lab to test the water quality at beaches and boat launches on Lake Winnebago, Lake Butte des Mortes, and Lake Poygan on a weekly basis. Watch for advisories and closures this summer on our website and Facebook page.

What to know:

There are two water hazards to watch for:

  • E. coli is a bacteria that can sometimes be present in the water, even though it cannot be seen with the naked eye. It occurs naturally in the environment, often due to wildlife feces. Our team tests for E. coli each week to help monitor water quality. To stay healthy, please avoid entering the water whenever advisories or closures are in place.
  • Algae Blooms are visible to the eye, and can sicken people and animals who swim in contaminated water. They often smell bad, and look like spilled paint or pea soup. Blooms can appear overnight and can vary in size and color. When in doubt: stay out!

Men's Health Month

Men die an average five years earlier than women - often from preventable causes. Closing the Lifespan Gender Gap starts with education, connection, and shared advocacy. When men and their care partners have access to the right information and support, preventive care can happen earlier and outcomes may improve. Men’s Health Month is a reminder that better lifespans are built together.

We invite you to share this message to start conversations around health:

May Staff Spotlight: Kim!

Position: Administrative Associate for the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program, I've been with WIC/Winnebago County Public Health over 19 years, and with Winnebago County nearly 22 years.

Where you've seen Kim: In the Oshkosh office working with WIC families and at the Hyde Center (Oshkosh Boys and Girls Club) on Walk in Wednesdays doing outreach and lead testing. Outside of work you can find me riding and training gaited horses, spending time with my dog Snarf, enjoying music, cooking, the outdoors, and staying physically active.

Walk With A Housing Authority Nurse

Winnebago County Public Health has two nurses dedicated to serving our Housing Authority residents: Lori and Erin. Last month they started a new program: walk with the housing authority nurses.

Inspired by the evidence based "Walk with a Doc" programs, we know that this initiative benefits participants in multiple ways:

  • Walking is good for your heart
  • Spending time with other people and outside in nature benefits your mental health
  • Learning about ways to lead a healthier lifestyle from a healthcare professional is beneficial overall

This is just one of the many ways your local Public Health Department works daily to make our community a healthier place to live, work and play.

Micro-Joy Moment

Micro-Joys:

How To Turn Down The Noise In a Noisy World

We live in a busy world. Simple micro-joys interrupt the stress response, allow you to shift your perspective, and help you feel a sense of control over your emotional state. The goal is to pause - have a brief meaningful moment of self-care every day. The other perk? Micro-joys only take a micro amount of time!

This month your micro-joy moment from Winnebago County Public Health is a summer bingo card. You could recruit a friend to join in the fun and then celebrate each other's bingos (you get to mark a space off for that!) or simply use this as a reminder to take time to enjoy your favorite parts of summer.
