Public Safety Updates:
Progress on Legislation
Additional Police Officers
Burglary Alert

|
Dear Neighbors,
Thanks to all of you who responded to our last ward newsletter discussing the horrific carjackings recently in our area. This situation cannot be tolerated.
Here are some of the new developments:
- Federal Charges were brought against the perpetrator. You can see details here. The offender remains in federal custody, and the investigation continues. The next court date is May 24. U.S. Attorney John Lausch declared, “Our message to would-be carjackers and those using guns to commit crimes is simple: Committing a senseless act of violence like carjacking will earn you a home in federal prison for a long time.”
- We are receiving additional police officers - 8 for the 18th District (south of Fullerton) and 10 for the 19th District (north of Fullerton). Since January, our two districts have received 77 new officers, all welcome additions.
- Yesterday, the Illinois Senate passed a bill to close a loophole that allowed offenders to escape prosecution by simply claiming that they "didn't know" a vehicle was stolen. The bill also allows detention of juvenile carjackers pending trial under some circumstances. This proposal, by State Senator Bill Cunningham and pushed by Alderman Matt O'Shea (19), Michael Scott (24), and me, helps to close the revolving door allowing juvenile offenders charged with serious crime to be released within 24 hours. The bill now goes to the Illinois House. Find your state representative here and tell them to support SB2339 and become a co-sponsor.
