Dear Common Ground Community,

Common Ground has welcomed our students back for the 2027 school year, and we are so excited to see what lies ahead! Our high schoolers have jumped into life at Common Ground with both feet such as taking classes like Outdoor Leadership and Early College Shakespeare Performance, visiting colleges and building the academic skills they need to succeed there, and diving into paid green jobs and after-school programs from cooking club to math lab.

Back in May, we shared how charter schools across Connecticut continue to face a persistent funding gap. While we were encouraged to see the state investing $273 million into municipal school districts, the reality for public charter schools like ours remains complex. Of that massive investment, only a small fraction, roughly $8.7 million, is earmarked for all charter schools statewide to share.  For Common Ground, that means a one-time investment of roughly $700 extra per student, not nearly enough to close the existing gap in funding between charters and other public schools, and not nearly enough to cover the rising costs of everything it takes to run a school. And, this is a one time adjustment, not a lasting change. Without further legislative action, funding levels will go back to 2025-26 levels next school year.

There is a common narrative that charter schools “take funding” from traditional public schools, but that is simply not accurate in Connecticut. When a family chooses to send their child to a school that best fits their needs, the home district still retains funding for that student. School choice isn’t about taking resources away it’s about giving families options.

Because of these structural funding rules, state funding alone does not cover what it actually costs to educate our youth. We work tirelessly to stretch every dollar, aggressively pursue competitive grants, and explore new funding streams. However, the honest truth about running a high-quality public charter school in Connecticut today is that the math simply doesn't math. This year, we need to raise more than $6,000 per student in grants and donations, on top of public per student funding, to give our students the education they deserve.

Our Executive Director, Genevive Walker, speaking at Feast from the Fields 2026.

To share more about where we are headed this year and why your partnership matters now more than ever, here is a message from our Executive Director, Genevive Walker:

Dear Friends,

As educators, families, community leaders, and advocates, we share a common goal: ensuring that every child in Connecticut has access to a high-quality public education, regardless of where they live or which public school they attend.

Today, I am writing to invite you into an important ongoing conversation about funding equity for Connecticut's public charter schools.

Charter School students are public school students. Common Ground and other Connecticut charter schools are public schools. We educate thousands of students across our state, yet we continue to receive significantly less public funding than traditional district schools. Unlike local districts, charter schools do not receive local tax revenue and must operate with substantially fewer resources while being held to the same (often higher) expectations for student achievement and accountability.

This funding gap is more than a line item in a budget. It has real consequences for students, educators, and school communities.

When funding at Common Ground falls short:

  • We have fewer resources available for academic and enrichment programming.
  • Our teacher and staff salaries become less competitive, making recruitment and retention more challenging.
  • Our student support services are limited despite growing needs.
  • Our school leaders are forced to make difficult decisions about priorities that no public school should have to make.

Every dollar that is unavailable to a charter school is a dollar that cannot be invested in students, educators, and opportunities.

As someone who has spent many years serving students and families through public schools, charter schools, and nonprofit leadership, I know that lasting progress happens when people come together around shared values and shared solutions. This is not about competition. It is about fairness. It is about recognizing that all public school students deserve access to the resources they need to thrive.

Connecticut has made important progress in recent years, but Common Ground still does not receive full funding under the state's education funding formula and continues to operate without access to local education funding streams available to district schools.

Over the coming weeks, we will share more information about:

  • The impact of funding disparities on students and educators.
  • Firsthand experiences from teachers and administrators.
  • Opportunities to advocate for greater funding equity.

I believe that strong public education benefits everyone. By working together, we can build a system that provides all students with the resources, opportunities, and support they deserve.

Thank you in advance for your partnership to move us closer to a more equitable future for every public school child.

In partnership,

Genevive Walker, Executive Director

How You Can Help Us Bridge the Gap

We are coming to you today to ask for your help filling this critical funding gap so we can offer our students all the resources they need, pay our dedicated teachers, and ensure Common Ground stays around for another 30 years.

Every tax-deductible gift directly impacts our classroom capacity and student experience:

  • $100 helps fund essential supplies for hands-on, outdoor learning
  • $250 supports competitive compensation to attract and retain our amazing teaching staff
  • $500 pays the wages of a Green Jobs Corps member – this fall, 80 Common Ground students applied for 30 jobs!
  • $1,000 helps bridge the state per-pupil funding deficit for our high school programs
  • $6,000 completely closes the funding gap for one Common Ground student

Thank you for standing with Common Ground, standing with our students, supporting our teachers, and believing in educational choice.

With gratitude,

Briona “Bri” Jenkins
