Hello,
This week marks the start of many publishers' summer catalogs. In the past, the strongest books were generally published early in each season because the booksellers would clear slow-moving books off their shelves at the end of each season to make room for the next batch of books, so titles published at the start of the season had the advantage of more time to make an impression.
Online bookselling and social media have made the seasonal ebbs and flows somewhat less pronounced, but even so, the first few weeks of winter/spring, summer and fall tend to be when many of the highest profile books publish. A case in point being this week's selection of almost 40 new and notable books including novels from
Andre Dubus III,
Conn Iggulden,
Lisa See,
Kristin Harmel,
Isabel Allende and
S. A. Cosby.
The bumper lineup also includes two books our members have been reading for our early reader program First Impressions:
The Little Italian Hotel, another heart-warmer from
Phaedra Patrick; and
Innards, a debut collection of stories by
Magogodi oaMphela Makhene. Also,
Nancy Horan's
The House of Lincoln (her third novel following the success of
Loving Frank and
Under the Wide and Starry Sky), which is the topic of our next book club discussion.
I've included brief details on 10 titles below, and you'll find more on all 39, including early reviews, in our
New This Week section (under the "New" tab in our main menu).
The "New" section is also home to our
Publishing by Month lists, where you can look forward to see what's publishing soon and back to previous months; debuts are indicated by a yellow highlight.
Enjoy!
