Josh awarding the turkey to "High Over All " winner Kevin Cole. |
|
This is always a really fun event. The weather was fantastic and we had a wonderful turn out of participants in this annual shoot. The HOA winner of this year's event was Kevin Cole with a score of 86 out of 100. Congratulations Kevin.
After the sporting clay shoot, we hosted a Turkey Shoot which consisted on a number of different shooting games by the Duck Pond.
We handed out 20 turkey's and 5 Hams to the winners.
It was truly a BLAST !

NCSA Level 1 Instructors Course
|
|

|
Instructor Wayne Morrow and client |
Silver Willow was host to the coveted NSCA Level I Instructor Certification course taught by Luther Cutts. It was held over the weekend of September 29 to October 1.
This course was limited to eight participants, and it sold out quickly, much to the disappointment of several people who were interested. The course covers the NSCA instructional program, and provides the new instructors with the tools that will ensure they can safely introduce new shooters to the game of sporting clays.
The course was a real success, with a strong group of students and a lot of positive energy. Two of the more senior Level I Instructors in the Canada, Bob Ferguson and Wayne Morrow, assisted in the delivery of the course and provided great support throughout the weekend. We had several people travel from Red Deer and beyond to take the course, and there was interest from as far away as Billings, MT. Approximately 30 people volunteered to be "students" to these new instructors, and they overwhelmingly found the sessions to be both beneficial and enjoyable. Silver Willow is pleased to be able to add more capable and qualified instructors to an already strong and flourishing program.
There was enough interest in this course to enable us to plan another course for the weekend of April 20 to 22 (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) in 2018. This course will also be limited to eight participants, so if you are interested, please secure your spot on the course early and avoid the disappointment as was the case for this most recent course.
For more information, visit the NSCA website or contact Luther Cutts at [email protected]

On The Wild Side - It's Duck Hunting Season
|
Wild duck and geese hunters prefer the lean meat of the waterfowl. However, the key to successfully cooking the meat is to understand that duck and waterfowl are not the same as cooking poultry Wild duck is best eaten rare to medium. Similar to red meat, duck juices run red, not clear, like poultry. The meat itself is a deep garnet red. As with any wild game, make a point not to overcook it and to eliminate as much of the natural fat as possible and replace it with domestic oil or fat products, such as butter or olive oil. Fat, as you might know, is an insulator for waterfowl, and a lubricant. If there is too much fat, it will prevent the skin from crisping.
Keep in mind that diving ducks, such as scaup, ringnecks, red-heads, buffleheads, goldeneyes, ruddy ducks, oldsquaw or eiders may need to be brined in order to soften any possible fishy taste.
Ingredients
2 fat ducks, like mallard or pintail
salt
3 tablespoons sugar
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
2 cups duck stock or beef stock
4 sweet oranges
1 tablespoon arrowroot or corn starch
3 table spoons Grand Marnier or other Orange Liqueur
1/4 teaspoon orange bitters (optional)
2 tablespoons room temperature butter

Feature Article - by Luther Cutts
|
The game of International Sporting, commonly referred to as "FITASC", is considered by many shooters to be the highest form of shotgun sport.
It is a game that is strictly controlled with very specific rules of conduct, both on the sporting field and off. Unfortunately, the game has acquired a reputation of being a very complex and unfriendly game, which is unwarranted. There are plenty of rules, but they make sense to the average shooter once them become familiar with them, and the trained official is there to help shooters. The best officials see their role as to help the shooter break as many targets as possible within the confines of the rules.
Safety is strictly adhered to during all International Sporting events. Everyone on or near the shooting position must wear both eye and ear protection.
At larger events, such as Grand Prix shoots, National and World Championship shoots, there are ceremonies with specific dress codes, and all shooters and officials are expected to comply with these requirements.
