LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

We are pleased to share our first newsletter of 2026, following a truly meaningful milestone - our 75th Anniversary celebration. This moment offered a powerful opportunity to reflect on our legacy and reaffirm our mission: supporting young people as they work to earn their degrees and build the futures they envision for themselves.

The demand for our scholarships continues to grow. This year, the Foundation received 672 applications - nearly 100 more than last year. Each application represents a motivated student seeking access to higher education and the chance to pursue their goals. The increasing need underscores just how vital this work remains.

Our Pullman Alumni Scholar Selection Committee, now comprised of over 100 dedicated volunteers, is currently reviewing essays and conducting interviews. Their thoughtful evaluation and time commitment are essential to this process, and we are deeply grateful for their service and leadership.

We are especially proud that well over half of our Pullman Scholars are the first in their families to earn a college degree, and that each cohort reflects the rich diversity of Chicago and Cook County. These students bring talent, perseverance, and a strong sense of purpose to their academic journeys.

In addition to financial support, we continue to invest in a comprehensive support system for our scholars. Through monthly check-ins, career and life-skills seminars, and mental health resources, we are strengthening our commitment to meet scholars where they are. Most importantly, we strive to be active and responsive listeners—so we can adapt our programs as the world evolves and new challenges to earning a degree emerge.

Thank you for your continued support and belief in the Pullman mission. We truly could not do this work without you, and we are grateful to partner with you in creating opportunity and changing lives.

CONGRATULATIONS:

Congratulations to Lisa O’Banner, Director of Administration, on her 20th Anniversary with the Pullman Educational Foundation. We thank you for your dedication and exceptional service to the Foundation and its mission.

BUILDING COMMUNITY

The Foundation welcomed alumni to Porter Kitchen and Deck for our annual Alumni Mixer on November 13, 2025. Thank you to everyone who joined us for a great evening of conversation, connections, and community - we’re so glad you could be part of it!

CONNECTING SCHOLARS

Throughout the fall semester, Pullman Scholars across the country came together on campus to share a meal provided by the Foundation. Scholars at New York University, Northwestern University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the University of Southern California gathered to catch up, swap stories, share advice, and enjoy laughs over great food. These meet-ups are an excellent reminder that the Pullman Scholar community is never far away.

Get ready to cheer on Pullman Scholar Alumnus Vic Andrade (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1978) as he embarks on an epic cross-country journey! This spring, Vic, known on the road as “the Lone Rider,” will bicycle the legendary Route 66, riding from Santa Monica all the way to Chicago. Along the way, he’s raising awareness for the Pullman Educational Foundation by inviting family and friends to donate to the Foundation in his honor. Vic will finish his incredible journey in Chicago at the Pullman Scholar Symposium on May 21, 2026. The adventure kicks off in April, and you can follow along on his blog at thelonerider.bike/.

SCHOLAR WINTER EVENT

On January 6th, the Foundation hosted its annual Scholar Party at the Chicago Athletic Association over their winter break. It’s always a wonderful time to gather as a community before the scholars head back to school to begin their spring semester.

We wish all our Pullman Scholars a successful finish to their 2025-2026 school year.
