2021 MOCF Student Impact Initiative
The Michigan Osteopathic College Foundation brings immense value to the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. This year has been remarkably different, to say the least. Not only has it changed the way we’ve been educating our students, but how we’ve been interacting with all our great partners. In 2021, instead of focusing all of our fundraising efforts on the in-person MOCF Ball—we are focusing the next four months on a virtual fundraising campaign which will continue to support student scholarships, student-related activities, post-graduate medical education and outreach efforts.
While there won’t be an MOCF Ball in February, please mark your calendar to join us for a virtual event scheduled for Saturday, February 27 at 5:00pm. More details to come.

What you need to know about the JAOA’s major changes in 2021
The JAOA will soon be an open access, online-only journal with a brand new name. These changes will make it easier to submit and read research, the JAOA’s director says.
A new era for The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association starts on Jan. 1, 2021. Next month, the journal will transition to an online-only, open access publication and change its name to Journal of Osteopathic Medicine (JOM, or “JOMed”). The journal is also now partnered with de Gruyter, a major academic publisher of journals and books.
“In making these changes, the journal is aiming to continue its mission of providing a home for all research conducted about the osteopathic medical profession,” says Melissa Schmidt, MEd, director of JOM....(Continue to full article on The DO)

MOA Congratulates Dr. Thomas Simmer on retirement from BCBSM
|
The Michigan Osteopathic Association, its Board of Trustees and Staff want to take this opportunity to congratulate Dr. Thomas Simmer, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer on his retirement at the end of December, after 21 years with BCBSM. Dr. Simmer has been a long-time advocate for primary care physicians and their medical associations, both Osteopathic and Allopathic.
|
|
|
Dr. Simmer joined BCBSM in 1999, and over the years has been responsible for reimbursement, medical policy, and professional payment policies. Under his leadership, BCBSM has implemented a number of collaborative programs to improve access, cost, and quality of medical services. His decision making led to the establishment of BCBSM’s Physician Group Incentive Program (PGIP), which brought the previously disjointed Michigan physician community together through financial incentives around population health programs. He is the recipient of many awards for his work in promoting health care transformation in Michigan through collaborative programs across the state.
Tom Simmer is a physician leader, whose initiatives set a blueprint for quality. His approach is always thoughtful, collaborative, and patient centered. As he begins his well-deserved retirement, he leaves a strong foundation of primary care and primary care advocacy across the state.
According to the announcement by BCBSM, Dr. Simmer and his replacement, James Grant, MD, have been working together since September to make the transition successful. Most recently, Doctor Grant was chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and physician executive for perioperative services at the Cedars-Sinai Health System in Los Angeles. Previously, he was at Beaumont Health, and was chair of the Beaumont-Royal Oak Department of Anesthesiology for thirteen years.
As we sincerely thank Dr. Thomas Simmer for his years of service to the medical profession and wish him the best in his retirement, MOA congratulates Dr. Grant on his new role with BCBSM.
