Set the Record Straight
MOA and MSUCOM Combat DO disinformation
The Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) and Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) have issued a joint statement to combat the misinformation regarding the training and abilities of osteopathic physicians that has been spread through the news outlets and social media. The statement was signed by MOA President Jeffrey Postlewaite, DO, FACOOG, Dean Andrea Amalfitano, DO, PhD, and MOA Exceutive Director, Kris Nicholoff.
The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) was quick to respond to the false statements made in the media. With a campaign that included social media targeting the news outlets who originated the false claims disparaging DOs and statements from AOA leaders. The effort also included statements from the American Medical Association (AMA) highlighting the fact that DOs and MDs work side-by-side on a daily basis.
"Certainly, we stand side-by-side with the swift actions of the AOA, AACOM, as well as all DOs and professional partners to help educate those who are misinformed about our profession and refute those who seek to undermine a 130-year tradition of providing compassionate and holistic care to the nation and state of Michigan."
The MOA encourages all of the DO family to share the posts and statements the set the record straight.
Thank you to the AOA for leading the effort to #GetItRight & share the importance DOs have on healthcare.

AOA statement regarding offensive FIGS ad
Immediate action resulted in the ad being taken down and an apology from FIGS to all DOs and female physicians.
On October 20, 2020, the AOA released a statement on the recent offensive FIGS ad:
When FIGS, a designer scrubs and medical apparel company, released an advertising campaign featuring a female physician in pink scrubs wearing a nametag that said “DO” and reading a “Medical Terminology for Dummies” book upside down, the AOA took immediate action. This imagery is laughable in its absurdity—but it isn’t funny.
The American Osteopathic Association, which represents 151,000 osteopathic physicians and medical students, does not find it humorous to downplay the education and training of Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine—which include, at minimum, four years of medical school followed by three to seven years of residency to practice in any specialty they choose. Equally important, the organization does not find it “cute” to portray females, let alone female physicians, in such a denigrating light. ( continue to full statement)...

MOA Student board member Samantha MacKay-Forton receives award from COSGP
MOA Student Board Member Samantha MacKay-Forton and Emma Theis were awarded "Best Virtual School Presentation" by the Council of Osteopathic Student Government President (COSGP) in their annual awards. Both students are in their second year at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM).
They presented Leading Leadership Styles to the COGP General Council at the Annual Summer Meeting. "Leading a team of leaders that often vary in communication styles, conflict resolution, and even meeting style preferences can be challenging," said MacKay-Forton. Both MacKay-Forton and Theis worked together to design a leadership retreat for their executive board that focused on building a strong foundation on mutual understanding of team members that may communicate and think differently.
They outlined how to gauge leadership strengths and weaknesses to compile individual team member profiles to discuss and use as reference throughout their term, stressing that understanding other's strengths helps strengthen the team dynamic, no matter what the year holds-even if it is a pandemic.

The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses a crucial public safety and public health issue. According to the 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 9.9 million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs. The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.
The DEA’s Take Back Day events provide an opportunity for Americans to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths.
