Medicaid & BadgerCare Plus Updates:
The COVID National Public Health Emergency was officially renewed, effective July 15, 2022. The 90-day renewal takes us to the middle of October.
On July 13, the US Department of Health and Human Services released guidance to states on health coverage options for certain Ukrainian Nationals.
Wisconsin's Department of Health Services is sending letters to select individuals enrolled in BadgerCare Plus.
On July 25, the US Department of Health and Human Services announced a proposed rule to strengthen nondiscrimination in health care. We explain.
FoodShare Updates:
The USDA has approved Wisconsin's request to provide Emergency Allotments to FoodShare households for the month of August 2022.
On July 11, Wisconsin's DHS issued an Operations Memo announcing the USDA Nondiscrimination updates in FoodShare and FSET programs.

A new report lists the most socially responsible hospitals in the U.S. They identified that fewer than 2% of hospitals earned the designation of "most socially responsible."
The Transparency in Coverage Final Rules took effect July 1, 2022, requiring insurance companies and employer health plans to post in- and out-of-network rates they negotiate with providers. We explain.

Social Security Updates:
The Social Security Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) for 2023 will not be confirmed until later this year, likely October. A few estimates have already been discussed. We take a closer look.
Earlier this year, the Social Security Administration released a new, online tool that records requests to schedule appointments for people who want to file an application for SSI. We explain.
Vaccine Updates:
On July 13, the FDA authorized the Novavax COVID vaccine for adults ages 18 and older. This is a protein-based vaccine, different from the mRNA-based shots produced by Pfizer and Moderna. We explain.

The birth tax policy creates stress and uncertainty for predominantly low-income and minority pregnant women and families. Most states eliminated this harmful policy. Sadly, Wisconsin leads the nation in birth tax collections. Eliminating the birth tax is only one step to help reduce poor birth outcomes, but it is one we can change!
