New Trees
Say hello to one of our newest family members, Pagoda Dogwood, located just south of the parking lot. Jim and Lorry Martin’s daughter, Linda, requested that a tree of our discretion be planted in honor of Jim and Lorry Martin using memorial funds. Little did we know, our final selection turned out to be Lorry’s favorite tree! Learn more about this native tree using this link.
Our other new family member is a Hybrid Swamp-Bur-Oak, located between the church shed and Broadhead. The original Bur Oak that was donated by Jean Blackmore’s family was challenged. So, with Jean’s involvement and approval to use remaining memorial funds, this tree has been removed and replaced with a new tree. The new tree is a naturally occurring hybrid of a Swamp Oak and a Bur Oak, offering the best of both. It currently is small but has a faster growth rate than either the Swamp or the Bur Oak on their own. Learn more about this native tree using this link.
The links for both trees come from Johnson’s Nursery in Menomonee Falls where the trees were purchased and then planted by Good Oak Ecological Services who planted our large pollinator garden and the original three oak trees.

Tip of the Week
October is BAT Appreciation Month! “These remarkable fliers not only consume vast numbers of mosquitoes but also pollinate night-blooming flowers, making them essential to healthy ecosystems. Their populations are at extreme risk. How can you help: plant native (provides insect food), build a bat box for safe shelter, leave the leaves (provides food & warmth), turn off outside lights or use downcast or red lights, reduce chemical use (homeowners use 10 times more pesticides per acre than farmers)”. Click the link below to the National Wildlife Federation Blog and test your knowledge of bats, learn how to build a bat house, find activities for kids, and more info on how to support bats. FYI, bats do not carry rabies any more than other mammals, nor are they blind.

Actions on Palestine
In accordance with the Wisconsin Conference UCC Palestine Working Group (WCUCCPWC), our Social Justice Collective is suggesting that we, as individuals, participate in the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) Movement against companies engaged in business in the Israeli settlements on stolen Palestinian land. “The theft of land to make way for Israeli colonial settlements is a violent act that deprives Palestinian families of their homes, livelihoods, and the very communities in which they live [and] … is a clear violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention.” (WCUCCPWG documents)
The land forcibly stolen from Palestinian owners is guarded by the Israeli military, and no Palestinian is allowed access without permission from the Israeli internal security organization Shin Bet.
Two property rental companies are the initial targets of this BDS Movement: Airbnb.com and Booking.com. Both provide short-term rental properties in the settlements, supporting Israel’s efforts to maintain and even expand the operation of the settlements.
More details will be provided over the next several months. In the meantime, the WCUCCPWG (wcucc.org/PalestineJustice) provides a great deal of information about the history of the settlements and the BDS Movement, the reasons for targeting Airbnb and Booking .com, and some alternative ways to rent vacation housing.

Singing Resistance
If you enjoyed singing at our Social Justice Sunday, take a peek at this website! The majority of songs originated with the Singing Resistance movement! Singing Resistance is a mass movement of singers seeking to protect and care for our communities in the face of policies and actions that are harming people. We are rooted in love, nonviolence, solidarity, and hope.
Singing Resistance Goals:
- We are radically welcoming
- We sing simple songs, taught by ear and relevant to these times
- We seek to end all oppressive systems
- We aim to combine singing with action
- Actions are grounded in love, solidarity. and nonviolence.
