The City of Miami Beach will undertake an emergency infrastructure improvement project involving the replacement of the existing 16-inch sewer force main originating from Sewer Pump Station 19. This pipeline travels in a northerly direction through Indian Creek Drive before converging with a primary 20-inch line at the intersection of 69 Street.
This project was initially scheduled to begin in March 2025; however, additional time was required to complete permitting. Construction is now scheduled to begin on Monday, June 9, 2025.
The project will upgrade the current 16-inch main to a 20-inch diameter pipe and install a new bypass pumpout system to replace the existing 6-inch pumpout. The existing force main has reached the end of its useful life and is in severely deteriorated condition. It is expected to experience continued ruptures unless fully replaced.
Once completed, the new force main and bypass system will enhance the reliability and performance of the sewer infrastructure in the area.
Timeline
Project construction is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 9 until October 2025. Construction work hours are during overnight hours from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Extended time is subject to city approval and community notification.
Please know that schedules may change due to weather and unforeseen circumstances.
Traffic Impacts
The City will employ all available resources to minimize disruption to residents and local businesses throughout the duration of the project. The work will occur overnight hours in order to not impact traffic during the day.
Traffic operations will be supported by traffic control personnel when necessary during construction hours. Channeling devices, signage and lighting will be used to safely guide vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians through or around the work zone. Access to the nearby fire station will remain open at all times.
Work will take place along Indian Creek Drive near 69 Street. Intermittent lane closures will occur overnight, and detours will be clearly marked to reroute traffic through adjacent neighborhood streets. Local access will be maintained.
- One lane may be closed during working hours with traffic shifted or diverted as needed.
- Pedestrian pathways and bicycle access may be temporarily adjusted. Cyclists may be required to share travel lanes with vehicular traffic.
- Drivers should expect possible delays and are urged to follow posted detour signage.
- The temporary traffic maintenance plan will only be in place during construction hours.
