Life Launch Takes Flight again Tonight!
We are excited to introduce a new program called Life Launch. It has blasted off with great success! It is designed to help our students increase their soft skill mastery which is critical for success in the real world. Soft skills are increasingly valuable to organizations as they become more dynamic, interconnected, and flexible by necessity.

Our first session was very successful! Nearly 50 students attended the session “Teamwork” presented by Terrance Smith, Director of the Mobile Mayor’s Innovation Team. Mr. Smith lives by the motto “Make Mistakes, Make Improvements, Never Make Excuses.” Our students enjoyed the presentation and engaged in the conversation with many questions.

Ms. Cheryl Williams, ASMS Foundation Board member and owner of Sperion Staffing Services, presented Resume Writing Tips and Strategies recently. Students learned some very valuable strategies to help them prepare their resume for internships, applying to college, and even the job market.

This evening at 5pm in the auditorium, Life Launch presents Class 3 -- “Branding and Marketing Yourself." Marcus Neto, owner of Blue Fish, an advertising agency in downtown Mobile, will discuss challenges and opportunities associated with social media. He will share a few tools and skills as well. We hope our students enjoy each class. Students who attend 6 out of 9 sessions this year will receive a Certificate of Completion, and participation will be added to their transcript.

A Scholar in Her Honor
Rachel Dark was a student at ASMS who graduated in the Class of 2011. She was tragically killed in a car accident in 2017. Rachel's portrait will be on a float at the Rose Bowl parade this year in her memory. Her family will be completing the portrait at a special event on the ASMS campus in November. At the celebration event, Rachel's family wants to honor Rachel's life by giving a scholarship to a current ASMS senior.

If you would like to be considered for this scholarship, please complete this scholarship application by Friday, October 22 at 12:00 PM CST.

ASMS Alumna Susannah Barnes (Class of 1994) Created Opportunities for Students to work with Advanced Technologies through Data Intelligence Project
According to Susannah's family, they and her friends are very proud of her accomplishments. She is a data governance specialist who felt that students in the School of Information Studies at the University of Wisconsin, Madison could benefit from learning advanced data technology. Read the article to see how she made it happen. Her family shared that the education she received at ASMS paved the way for her achievements and for the success that she’s had in the years since graduation.
Rotary Student of the Week
On October 7th, ASMS senior Olivia McAleer was recognized by the Mobile Rotary Club as their student of the week. She and I were guests at their luncheon where she gave a two-minute speech on Service Above Self. Dr. Hoyle was also present and took a few pictures. Perhaps this can be included in the next newsletter.
German Board Game Night
German Club hosted a board games session for students on campus with Ms. Hoequist's authentic German board games. We plan to repeat the event as students learn more games. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to spend time with friends, but also learn phrases and verbal transactions which are not addressed in the traditional classroom setting!
This Week in Marine Bio
Marine Biology students are learning about threats to Marine ecosystems. Plastic is a huge problem to our local Marine environment and much of it makes its way via runoff. In class today, students did their part to protect our valuable coastal system by picking up all of the balloons around campus!
National Youth Leadership
Anna K. Livingston has received an invitation to the National Youth Leadership Forum in Washington DC. Selected students will attend a six-day forum over the summer that will introduce them to a possible career in national security, intelligence, or a diplomatic field. I am not sure what you usually highlight in the newsletter, but I wanted to pass this information along to you. She is a junior at ASMS.
Parent Association Car Wash Fundraiser
Thanks to all of our volunteers and donors who made this event a success!
Parent Association Announces PA Grant Award Recipients

The PA voted to approve funding, fully or partially, for 6 out of the 11 grant requests that were submitted. The amount of funds allocated exceeded $4,500, but the overall ask this fall during the grant process was over $17,000.
