Take 5
As the Thanksgiving break draws near, I wanted to share some insight regarding your expectations when your student returns home. School and residential life can be very stressful as students juggle classes, clubs, sports and friendships. Your student is looking forward to enjoying the sanctuary of home and family. Be patient if they sleep more and want to just do nothing. They may also lack interest in talking about school initially but will eventually engage in several conversations centered around life at ASMS. As students look forward to a less rigid schedule, I would suggest scheduling appointments throughout all holiday breaks to avoid being overwhelmed. Students will need to take time for themselves, maybe catch up on their favorite shows, spend time with their pets, and catch up with their friends and family. Overall, we want our students to relax, recharge, and enjoy their time at home. I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving Break!

  • Brrrrr! It's been cold in Mobile! Thanksgiving break is a great time to discuss proper winter attire.
  • Flip Flops and shorts are discouraged with temperatures below 40 degrees.
  • Please send coats, socks, closed toe shoes, gloves, and scarves.
  • Please talk with your student about personal hygiene needs at this time. They need soap/ body wash, toothpaste, shampoo, and deodorant.
  • Students need to be washing their linens on a regular basis.
  • We are in the middle of cold and flu season. Please send any over the counter medications that you have approved on the web form and cough drops.
  • Facial tissues are a must!
  • Students should not share their drinks and food with their friends. This is a way to transmit viruses such as colds, flu, and mononucleosis.

If you have any concerns about the spread of infection, please call me (251-441-2119).

Dr. Ortell's Microbiology class created plate art using microbes
students isolated from around campus. They learned how to culture on agar
plates using sterile techniques. Out of the 14 submissions, 4 students were chosen as finalists in the amateur category for the ASM Plate Art competition.
It was a super fun way for the students to learn about microbes, how they grow, how diverse they are, and how to culture them safely.

Dr. Palazzini's seniors in economics class completed financial planning newsletters. They each designed their own newsletter which focused on retirement planning!
The University of South Alabama held its World Language Essay Contest early in German this year. Three ASMS students from each level of German won!
